(Solo sex \u2013 that is, masturbation \u2013 is happily risk-free, assuming you aren\u2019t sharing toys!) And yes, that means even if you\u2019re having sex with people who don\u2019t have penises. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.ubc.ca\/2018\/01\/10\/sex-education-doesnt-reflect-real-life-realities-of-lesbian-and-bisexual-girls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showed that lesbian and bisexual teen girls are at higher risk of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/what-are-the-first-signs-of-pregnancy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pregnancy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and sexually transmitted infections compared to their heterosexual counterparts, which means there\u2019s a serious gap in knowledge. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Below, we cover off some of the things queer women may not know about safer sex practices when their partners have vaginas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What STIs Affect Lesbian &amp; Bisexual Women?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s a quick look at the STIs that you can be at risk for, even if you\u2019re not having sex involving a penis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Herpes<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Genital or oral herpes can spread easily and cause painful sores, though there are no effects upon fertility. There are medications that can stop outbreaks and lower transmission rates if your partner does have it, which you can talk to your doctor about. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generally, avoid sexual contact (including kissing) if you or your partner has an outbreak, and always use a barrier like a dental dam.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>HPV<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HPV can be spread through skin to skin contact, including by hands. HPV causes genital warts and can also cause cervical cancer, so learn more about preventing it through things like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/its-cervical-health-awareness-week-so-lets-get-aware\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vaccination<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Trichomoniasis<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trichomoniasis can be passed between during any sexual activity that involves the exchange of vaginal fluid. For some people it is symptomless, but for others they will experience <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/what-is-vaginal-discharge\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">frothy discharge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, pain when peeing, vulval soreness, and sometimes an unpleasant vaginal odor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chlamydia and gonorrhea are both caused by bacteria, which can infect the cervix, rectum, throat and urethra. There may be a discharge, but usually there are no symptoms. It\u2019s treated by antibiotics, but If they aren\u2019t treated, the bacteria may lead to an infection in the fallopian tubes and infertility. Chlamydia and gonorrhea can be passed through shared sex toys, hands, and by rubbing vulvas together.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So How Can I Avoid These STIs?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a few ways lesbian and bisexual women can have safer sex to avoid STIs. However, one of the most important things you can do is get tested frequently if you\u2019re having sex with new partners.
