Widely prevalent, and yet totally misunderstood. Conversations about HPV center around immunization, cervical cancer, and everyone\u2019s favorite- pap smears. Yet ask anyone about it, and usually their knowledge around HPV is murky.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re here to clear up the confusion of some common myths and questions regarding HPV.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>There are Different Strains: True<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HPV is actually a group of more than 100 related viruses. Of those, about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ashasexualhealth.org\/stdsstis\/hpv\/fast-facts\/\">30 strains<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">affect the genitals and anus. About 13 of those are considered high risk, as they can lead to certain types of cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>You Don\u2019t Always Show Symptoms: True<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An estimated <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/human-papillomavirus-hpv\/hpv-5-things-all-women-should-know\">90% of women<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0with HPV will never show symptoms, and the virus will clear up on its own in about two years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Everyone Has HPV: False<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it\u2019s not true that everyone has HPV, about 80% of sexually active people will have it at some point in their lives, but it typically clears up on its own.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>You Have to Have Sex to Contract HPV: No<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This depends on your definition of sex. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HPV is spread by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/std\/hpv\/stdfact-hpv.htm\">skin to skin<\/a> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contact of the genitals, as opposed to the exchange of bodily fluids. While genital strains of HPV are most commonly spread during vaginal and anal sex, it can be spread through oral sex as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Men Don\u2019t Show Symptoms: False<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Men can develop <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">genital warts from HPV <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">around their penis, scrotum, and anus. The confusion comes from them not showing symptoms of the strains of HPV that cause cellular changes- which can lead to cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There has also been a link between HPV and uncommon cancers in men like penile, anal, head, and neck.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there is currently no approved <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HPV test for men<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, pap tests are available for those with a greater risk of anal cancer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Genital Warts Leads to Cancer: False<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While genital warts can be entirely uncomfortable, the strains of HPV that cause them are different than those that cause cancer. They do however, put you at <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">risk<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for other STIs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>HPV Changes the Cervix: True<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain strains of HPV can cause <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cervical dysplasia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or abnormal changes to cervical cells, which can potentially lead to cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>HPV is Harmless: False<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While many people can go their whole lives without showing symptoms of HPV, certain types of it cause cervical cancer- the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/immunization\/diseases\/hpv\/en\/\">fourth most common cancer in women<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It can also cause other cancers in the throat, anus, vulva, and vagina. As well as lesions to the genitals, mouth, and upper respiratory tract.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Certain People are More Likely to be Affected: True<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those with a compromised immune system, like from HIV or AIDS or more likely to contract HPV. Open wounds and punctured skin can increase someone\u2019s risk of contracting strains of HPV that cause common warts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>HPV Has Greater Risks in Certain Areas of The World: True<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People in low and middle income countries with less access to sexual healthcare services are more likely to experience the harmful effects of HPV. About <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fightcancer.org\/policy-resources\/global-impact-cervical-cancer\">85% of cases<\/a> of cervical cancer, and 90% of deaths<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from it occur in these populations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The Body Heals HPV: True and False<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typically, the body clears up HPV on its own. Sometimes it can lead to genital warts, cellular changes, and certain kinds of cancers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>HPV is Treatable: False<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the virus itself isn\u2019t treatable, the effects of it are. Genital warts, precancerous cervical cells, and cancers caused by HPV are all treatable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that we have a better understanding about what HPV is, let\u2019s talk about how to protect yourself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The Shot<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The three approved vaccinations; Gardasil, Gardasil 9, and Cervarix prevent infections of HPV types 16 and 18. These two types are responsabile for about 70% of cases of cervical cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vaccination includes two to three rounds of shots, depending on the age the patient starts them, which is usually around eleven, but as old as twenty-six. This means someone could potentially be infected with HPV between the seperate shots, or with a strain that the vaccinations don\u2019t protect against. These vaccinations may also come with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">potential risks<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Know Your Status<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We said it before, and we\u2019ll say it again- get your pap smears! <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/cervical-screening-awareness-week-are-you-due-for-a-checkup\/\">Cervical screenings<\/a> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are relatively simple, and can give you vital information regarding your health and HPV status.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Glove it Up<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barrier methods of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/birth-control-options-best\/\">birth control<\/a> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">like diaphragms and condoms can help protect you against HPV. They are not 100% effective, so make sure to still get routine screenings<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Talk About It<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talk to your sexual partners about your status, and to your friends about how HPV may affect them. Better yet, share this article, and spread the word about HPV!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Don\u2019t Worry<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like we mentioned, HPV typically clears up on its own. If you do contract a strain with adverse effects, it\u2019s not your fault, or something to be ashamed of.
