Or just plain coming out of your head. In large clumps.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uh, what?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t panic, though! You are <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alone. Postpartum hair loss is completely normal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, on average, <\/span><b>40-50% of <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new moms report experiencing hair loss after childbirth.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s going on?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Postpartum hair loss is caused primarily due to a shift in hormones after pregnancy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generally speaking, you lose hair everyday. When you\u2019re pregnant, though, the hair loss actually decreases for the duration of your pregnancy. Mix high levels of hormones and increased blood volume and circulation and you\u2019ve got a glorious recipe for a continuous stage of growth. This is why your hair may appear healthier and more voluminous during pregnancy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But obviously this doesn\u2019t last.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your baby has to come out eventually.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And when they do, several hormone levels, including estrogen and progesterone, drop quickly. The increased levels of estrogen during pregnancy helped to slow the normal flow of hair loss.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, for whatever reason, when those estrogen levels return to normal, the body thinks it needs to make up for lost time and you begin to lose hair at a more rapid rate than you had been. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/parenting\/postpartum-hair-loss\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How much postpartum hair loss is normal?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On a normal day (before you were pregnant) you would shed about 80-100 hairs a day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s barely a loss when you compare it to the average 100,000 hairs on your head. With that small amount you may not have even noticed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But after having a baby, new moms can shed up to <\/span><b>400 hairs <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s a big difference.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And really helps to explain why we notice the drastic change.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You go from the best hair of your life, barely losing any of it thanks to the magic of pregnancy (at least there\u2019s one thing you can thank your hormones for!) \u2014 to it coming out in clumps whenever you dare to brush it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The change is a little off putting to say the least.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But again, it is normal. And it WILL come back.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How much hair loss is too much?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Postpartum hair loss is normal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, it\u2019s been said multiple times. But just making sure you remember.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because, like you, I\u2019ve been there and it can be disheartening to see all that hair coming out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That being said, there are some medical conditions that can cause hair loss.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you think it\u2019s something more, mention it to your doctor and they can help you rule out other problems like a thyroid issue or anemia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long does postpartum hair loss last?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Postpartum hair loss starts anytime after your baby arrives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After that it can last up to your baby&#8217;s first birthday. Generally the peak is around 4 months. The hair loss should start slowing down after that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But there have been cases where it\u2019s lasted longer or not even started until much later.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reach out to your doctor if you have concerns.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What can you do about postpartum hair loss?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ve heard me say Postpartum hair loss is normal about fifty times by now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And I\u2019m sure that you really just want to get to the \u201chow can I fix it\/stop it\u201d bit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may not be able to stop it, but there are a few things you can do to help your hair get back to normal.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Be healthy.\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yeah, this one seems to be the answer for anything that ails you, right?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s because taking care of your body and giving it the good stuff (the vegetables over fries kind of choices), gets you the results you want. So feed it well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take your beautiful baby for a walk if weather permits! Or \u2014 if you\u2019ve gotten the okay from your doctor \u2014 break out the yoga mat or home gym equipment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to the gym if you\u2019re ready for it!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It doesn\u2019t really matter what kind of exercise you do as long as you\u2019re moving.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Take vitamins<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s quite a few vitamins out there that like to boast about their hair growth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can choose one specifically for hair growth. Or look for one included with a daily women\u2019s vitamin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll want to check the label for ones that contain antioxidants like vitamins C and E. Those help to protect the scalp and hair follicles. Biotin and zinc on the other hand are what help fortify your hair and help it grow.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Try a new haircut<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another option would be trying out a new look.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your hairstylist should know a few different ways to help your hair appear fuller. This could include shortening up the length.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And yes. I know that sounds counterproductive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The thing is, shorter hair is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stronger <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">than longer strands are. That means that even fine hair can appear thicker than it actually is with the right kind of hair cut.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also stay away from too many layers. They can make your hair appear even thinner.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Volumizing shampoo<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If nothing else seems to be working for you, you can always try out volumizing shampoo. There\u2019s quite a few options out there that range in price.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can make the choice on your own or reach out to your hairstylist. Chances are they\u2019ll have an opinion on the one that would work best for you and your hair.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Postpartum \u2014 also known as the fourth trimester \u2014 can be a scary time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I mean you just became a mom!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You literally went from being pregnant one day to having to take care of another being the next! (If you don\u2019t count your partner.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That kind of whirlwind change can be a little daunting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The last thing you need to worry about is your hair.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Postpartum hair loss is normal and it will come back.
