The tingles and desires.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What many of us don\u2019t think about is the physiological changes when you\u2019re aroused. There\u2019s the telltale \u201cfeeling wet\u201d, flushed cheeks, shallow breathing, but why?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does the human body change when someone is horny?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Hot and Heavy Hormones<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re all familiar with hormones secreted by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/hormones-understanding\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">endocrine system<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Especially those related to sex and reproductive health. So it comes at no surprise that a whole cascade of them starts to flow when things start heating up.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At first, that sweet system of yours gets flooded with endorphins, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hormone.org\/your-health-and-hormones\/glands-and-hormones-a-to-z\/hormones\/adrenaline\">adrenaline<\/a>,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and dopamine, because frankly \u2013 you\u2019re excited. All this can cause your heart rate and pulse to speed up, and your blood pressure to rise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This surge of dopamine, the feel-good hormone, works on the reward center in the brain so that you keep coming back for more. Pun intended.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, you can\u2019t talk about intimacy without thinking of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/42198-what-is-oxytocin.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oxytocin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Often called the \u201clove hormone\u201d or \u201ccuddle hormone\u201d, oxytocin is released by the hypothalamus and helps facilitate bonding and affection. You may experience an extra dose of it during orgasm, drawing you that much closer to your partner.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Get Your Blood Pumping<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your blood flow changes a lot when you\u2019re horny.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This causes the classic \u201csex flush\u201d. The rosiness that creeps into your cheeks when you start going at it. It also causes noticeable changes down south.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For women, the whole reproductive structure changes, swells and expands in anticipation of what\u2019s to come. Hint: hopefully, that\u2019s you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blood vessels begin to dilate, especially those in your genitals. For women, this can change the appearance and feel of their vulva in all sorts of ways.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thanks to an increase in blood supply, the labia and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/clitoris-anatomy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clitoris<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may start to engorge and swell up. They may even change colors, turning to a more purple tone. If you\u2019re comfortable looking at your genitals, take a peek in a mirror or with your phone camera to see how they change throughout different stages of arousal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This can be a fun activity to bring your partner in on, so that you can both get to know your bodies a bit better.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Along with changing colors, this engorgement also triggers erections \u2013 even for women. Women also have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/lady-boners\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">erectile tissue<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Vaginal Variances\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most commonly recognized shifts is in vaginal fluids, or \u201cgetting wet\u201d. Depending on where you are in your cycle, you may have a higher concentration of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/cervix-101\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cervical<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> mucus or vaginal secretions. More blood flow in the vagina means more natural lubrication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, vaginal lubrication changes from person to person, and day to day. Certain medications and where you are in your cycle, if you\u2019re still menstruating, also have an effect on how wet you get.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During arousal, the vagina starts to dilate, or \u201ctent\u201d, making space for penetration. When the vagina elongates, it also pulls the cervix and uterus up and out of the way. The clitoral glans may become hidden under the hood, to protect it from hyperstimulation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Wait, There\u2019s More<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sexual arousal does wild things to the human body. Temperature starts to rise, pupils start to dilate, genitals engorge and expand. Your nipples may stand on end.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even your response to pain can change. For women, their pain threshold increased <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/0304395985901642\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">significantly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is one reason why a common kink or sexual preference includes things that may normally be thought of as painful, like spanking or rough play.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A higher pain threshold also means sex can be helpful in soothing period cramps, and other aches and pains.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019d like to point out that just because you may be physically experiencing some or all of the effects mentioned above, does not mean in any way that you are obligated to engage in a sexual act with another person.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"drscroll\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With who, when, and how you choose to engage with someone sexually should entirely rest in enthusiastic and mutual consent, not whether or not your body appears aroused.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the same vein, just because you may not be experiencing these sensations, does not mean you\u2019re not emotionally and mentally aroused.
