All too often sex ed is plagued by a lack of clarity and helpful information, or presented in a way that students won\u2019t necessarily benefit from.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As people get older and probably have more sex, they still usually haven\u2019t had a chance to evolve their knowledge of sexual health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The conversation around STIs continues to be filled with embarrassment and shame when in reality, they are a normal byproduct of being a sexual human being. Oftentimes, that means that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/normalizing-sti-stigma-vs-reality\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the stigma of STIs is greater than the reality of having one<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The more we are able to normalize STIs and all things sexual health, the more empowered people can feel about their sexual choices. No matter their age, gender, or sexual preferences.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>One of the greatest tools around normalizing STIs is education.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Which is what we\u2019re here today to do: Talk about STIs. Discuss the most commonly occurring ones, and other general questions you may have.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>How common are STIs?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ashasexualhealth.org\/stdsstis\/statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Sexual Health Organization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, one in two sexually active people in the U.S. will contract an STI by the age of twenty-five. Of the twenty million new STI cases that are diagnosed in the U.S. each year, about half of those are amongst people aged fifteen to twenty-four.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s pretty common! Without leading with fear, it is important to understand the nature of STIs, your risks, how to prevent them, and how to navigate them if you do get one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>How often should I get tested?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As with most things sexual health, this is a personal decision. It depends on who you\u2019re having sex, what kind of sex you\u2019re having, how many partners you have, and how many partners your partners may have.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For women 25 and younger, gonorrhea and chlamydia testing is recommended yearly. HIV testing is routinely offered to all. Those at risk may get tested more frequently. If you show any symptoms of an STI, it\u2019s important to get tested right away to prevent any long term health issues.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>How do I talk to my partner about STIs?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This conversation can be totally nerve-wracking, awkward, and full of so many other emotions. Especially if you have an STD, or have been diagnosed with an STI in the past.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only you know the best way to communicate with a new (or old) partner about STIs. It\u2019s important to be as honest and straightforward as possible. Asking questions like \u201cWhen was the last time you were tested?\u201d \u201cHave you had sex with anyone since then?\u201d \u201cHow do you work to prevent STIs?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember that not only are STIs common but that if you or your partner have one, you are still so worthy of having a thriving and fulfilling sex life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Now let\u2019s get to the basics on the most commonly diagnosed STIs\u2026<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Human Papillomavirus (HPV)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ever had a pap smear? That not so fun experience of swiping your cervix with a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cotton<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> swab, is to test for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/human-papillomavirus-(hpv)-and-cervical-cancer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HPV<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 the most commonly transmitted sexual infection.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HPV is actually the name for a group of viruses. Of the more than one hundred different strains of HPV, some are considered \u201chigh risk\u201d, which can potentially lead to cervical, genital, oral or anal cancers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other HPV strains can lead to genital warts, which are contagious through the skin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HPV can potentially be spread through any sort of skin to genital contact, not just penetration. While there is a vaccine that can help prevent certain types of HPV that can lead to cervical cancer, most cases of HPV resolve on their own within two years <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the virus remains in dormant state<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two strains of HSV, HSV-1 (which commonly causes oral cold sores), and HSV-2, which typically causes genital herpes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/products\/databriefs\/db304.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Health Organization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, about 47,8% of people under the age of fifty, have HSV-1, while 11,9% have HSV-2.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While both of these viruses are lifelong, some people who have them are asymptomatic. While both strains of HSV can be transmitted from a person who is asymptomatic, the risk is higher if they have active sores.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you do have HSV, this is nothing to be embarrassed about! Outbreaks can typically be managed and prevented through medication and\/or lifestyle choices.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, and Syphilis<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are the three most common reportable <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ashasexualhealth.org\/stdsstis\/statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">STIs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They\u2019re often grouped together, because while they are easily treatable with antibiotics when left untreated they can lead to fertility issues and other life-threatening side effects. Gonorrhoea and Chlamydia often can be transmitted together.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Potential symptoms of Gonorrhea and Chlamydia are yellow discharge, frequent or painful peeing, and vaginal <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or rectal<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> bleeding (outside of your period). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A transmission of<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Syphilis may cause a small painless ulcer on the genitals, followed by a rash on the hands and feet, and potential flu-like symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to seek treatment even if symptoms have subsided, as the virus can be latent in the body.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Much of the time, these infections may not cause symptoms, which is why it\u2019s important to be tested at a time interval that makes sense for you and your health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>HIV\/AIDS\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/health-topics\/hiv-aids\/#tab=tab_1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Human Immunodeficiency Virus <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(HIV), is an infection that causes a person\u2019s immune system to be weakened. If left untreated, over time HIV may lead to AIDS, or Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome. As of 2018, approximately 37.9 million people were living with HIV\/AIDS globally.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The impact of HIV\/AIDS greatly varies depending on what healthcare is accessible to an individual. Thanks to modern advances in medicine, many people with HIV are able to live long, thriving lives (and yes have sex) through the use of medications that keep their viral load low and even undetectable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span  id=\"drscroll\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for prevention, condoms, both male and female,\u00a0 can be very effective at minimizing the transmission of HIV.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people may not show any symptoms at the initial onset of the virus, but this is also when it is most contagious. After that, they may exhibit flu-like symptoms, weight loss, diarrhea, and a difficult time fighting off other infections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Remember, STIs are common, and not something to be ashamed of.
