The journey of getting pregnant can come with heartbreak, excitement, uncertainty, frustration, guilt, and so much more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One part of the process that can lead to confusion is a lack of clear information. It can be difficult to discern what is and isn\u2019t true when navigating conception. Much of the information that is spread is based on superstitions. We\u2019re here to set the record straight and clarify some of these misnomers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are seven of the top fertility superstitions\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Can I Get Pregnant if I Used to Be on The Pill?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With hormonal birth control (HBC) pills being so widely prescribed amongst teens, many people were on the pill for years and may have only gone off of it when they decided it\u2019s time to have a baby.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most pills work by suppressing the body\u2019s ability to ovulate, although not all. When you go off of it, it may take time for you to fall back into rhythm with your natural cycle. While it could just take a few short weeks, most <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/contraception\/when-periods-after-stopping-pill\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">experts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> say it will regulate within three months.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting pregnant can take time, and if you\u2019ve been on HBC for a while, you may not be familiar with your regular pattern and ovulation timing. Don\u2019t lose hope! One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2812881\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that 80% of women successfully became pregnant within a year of going off of the pill.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep in mind if you\u2019re not trying to conceive, that HBC does have a failure rate, and it\u2019s possible to get pregnant while on it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pill also doesn\u2019t protect against STIs. Which brings us to our next question.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Can an STI Affect my Ability to Get Pregnant?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/sexually-transmitted-infections-(stis)\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Health Organization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> estimates that more than one million new STI infections are acquired daily around the globe. STIs are a normal part of being a sexually active being, and are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/normalizing-sti-stigma-vs-reality\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not something to be ashamed of<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common STIs like chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and trichomoniasis are easily treatable if caught early on. In the long term, if left untreated, they can potentially cause difficulty conceiving, infertility, chronic pelvic pain, or negative birth outcomes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchhstp\/newsroom\/docs\/factsheets\/std-trends-508.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chlamydia and Gonorrhea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are the most common preventable causes of infertility. They can be easily treated with antibiotics, however, many people go undiagnosed because they are often asymptomatic. If you or your partner have an STI, be sure to complete your treatment regimen before becoming sexually active again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s recommended to get tested after every new sexual partner, and see that they\u2019ve been tested too, by having an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/sex-convos\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">open conversation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about STIs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s your reminder to get tested if it\u2019s been a while!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Can Having an Abortion Can Affect My Ability to Get Pregnant in The Future?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rarely.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The American College of Obstretrics and Gynecology, ACOG, claim that generally abortions do not affect someone\u2019s ability to get pregnant in the future.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While incredibly rare, there is a slight risk of damage to surrounding reproductive organs during a surgical abortion. Other potential complications can come from infections post-abortion. If left untreated, this could potentially lead to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/std\/pid\/stdfact-pid.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pelvic Inflammatory Disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, PID, which can affect the reproductive organs and lead to infertility.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Someone\u2019s risk of infertility from abortions increases with the amount of abortions they\u2019ve had.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>I\u2019m too Old to Get Pregnant<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a tricky one. Fertility of course, declines with age. Unfortunately, there\u2019s no way to predict exactly when that will be.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With so many people waiting longer and longer to have babies, this is becoming a more commonly occurring issue. Natural conception is no longer an option after someone has reached menopause. For the average menstruating person, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reproductivefacts.org\/news-and-publications\/patient-fact-sheets-and-booklets\/documents\/fact-sheets-and-info-booklets\/age-and-fertility\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fertility declines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after age 35. There are so many positive examples of women in their late 30\u2019s, 40\u2019s and even later having babies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>IVF is My Only Option\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Science offers so many incredible advances that help expand options for people throughout their reproductive years. For some people, IVF is a life-changing last resort, but it\u2019s not the first or only option.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people have had success with medication induced ovarian stimulation, cycle tracking, as well as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/intrauterine-insemination-iui\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intrauterine insemination<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (IUI).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many people have success by utilizing natural remedies or turning to holistic healthcare providers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/acupuncture\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acupuncture<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can help relieve stress, increase blood flow to reproductive organs, and increase someone\u2019s overall health \u2013 which can help when it comes to getting pregnant.
