Congrats! Yoga is a great form of exercise that improves muscle strength and flexibility, and that can also give you a sense of spiritual centeredness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, there is a persistent myth about periods that seems to bounce around yoga circles, so we thought we\u2019d address it here. So pull up a mat and put on your comfiest leggings while we talk all about practicing yoga on your period!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it Safe to Do Yoga While Menstruating?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Answer: Yes!\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may have heard that doing yoga<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014specifically, inversion poses like Plow, Dolphin, Crow, or headstands are unsafe or not advised during your period. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two reasons cited for this. The first is that menstruation is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">apana<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or downward-traveling movement of energy and that inversions would disrupt this flow. However, not all yoga teachers or styles agree that an inversion would disrupt that flow, and some yoga styles actually recommend them. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the spiritual component of yoga is very important with you, definitely talk to your instructor about your concerns!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In terms of whether it is medically safe for you to practice inversions while on your period, some suggest that you increase your risk of retrograde menstruation. That\u2019s a very fancy way of saying that the blood will flow backward. As terrifying as that sounds, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/6234483\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studies,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> retrograde menstruation is quite common.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> What\u2019s more, the suggested link between retrograde menstruation and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/endometriosis-sex\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> endometriosis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has not been conclusively proven.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can Yoga Help While Menstruating?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Answer: Yes!\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You now know that doing yoga doesn\u2019t pose a physical risk to your body, you might be wondering if there are any reasons you SHOULD practice yoga. The answer is yes!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve written about how various <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/yoga-for-cramps\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yoga poses can help with your menstrual cramps<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and some practices include engaging your pelvic floor. (We love any opportunity to get a Kegel workout in!). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Physical exercise in general gives us a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/what-helps-period-cramps\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">natural high<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of happy chemicals which can combat some of the less-than-fabulous-feelings during our periods.
