{"id":18448,"date":"2020-11-10T11:39:01","date_gmt":"2020-11-10T10:39:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/?p=18448"},"modified":"2020-11-10T18:36:16","modified_gmt":"2020-11-10T17:36:16","slug":"women-and-their-bodies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/women-and-their-bodies\/","title":{"rendered":"25% of Women Can&#8217;t correctly Identify Vagina (Infographic)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A new poll of 2,000 women found that <strong>one in ten<\/strong> were unable to correctly identify a diagram of a woman\u2019s reproductive system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The survey examined their anatomical knowledge of the women\u2019s reproductive system and found there are some major gaps when it comes to what women know about their own bodies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly one in four misidentified the vagina and <strong>46%<\/strong> could not properly identify the cervix.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Over half<\/strong> (59%) identified the uterus as a different body part too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The survey commissioned by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">INTIMINA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and conducted by OnePoll asked respondents what the menstrual cycle was in their own words and the results varied wildly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One respondent wrote the menstrual cycle \u201cgot rid of bacteria\u201d while another called it a \u201cperiodical body reset button.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another woman said \u201cI think the way we pee\u201d and another thought it was the \u201cdetoxification of [the] female body.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When respondents were presented with different potential definitions of the menstrual cycle, <strong>almost a quarter<\/strong> chose the incorrect response \u201cthe process a women\u2019s body goes through to shed excess blood.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Sixty-three percent<\/strong> were able to correctly identify the menstrual cycle as \u201cthe monthly changes a woman\u2019s body goes through in preparation for a possible pregnancy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond the menstrual cycle, women seemed equally confused by menopause. <strong>One in ten<\/strong> thought menopause simply meant a woman had entered her 40s and 13% thought it was a woman skipping a menstrual cycle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly <strong>two in five<\/strong> (38%) want to get the facts on menopause and perimenopause and that\u2019s the only thing women think they should know more about.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Fifty-seven percent<\/strong> of the women surveyed admitted they don\u2019t know as much about women\u2019s anatomy as they should.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Forty-two percent<\/strong> wished they had a better understanding of what the different organs in the reproductive system do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Over a third<\/strong> (35%) would want to know when a woman is her most fertile and <strong>three in ten<\/strong> (29%) want a breakdown of the different stages of pregnancy.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align:center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How well do women know their own bodies?\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eqBFpxOwOyc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Danela \u017dagar, INTIMINA Global Brand Manager<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said: <\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A woman\u2019s reproductive system is one of the most complex systems in the body. It is crucial to take steps to protect it from infections and injury, and prevent any health problems, not only physical but also psychological. The fact that nearly one in four women in the survey misidentified the vagina and 46% could not correctly identify the cervix shows we need to keep educating the public about how the reproductive system, its monthly processes, and hormonal changes can impact a woman\u2019s life. Only by understanding how our bodies work, can we understand possible health changes and issues we could be experiencing<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When asked who they blame for their lack of knowledge, <strong>one in three<\/strong> (36%) said teachers while <strong>28%<\/strong> blame their parents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>One in four<\/strong> (27%) said their lack of knowledge was due to government education standards or religious organizations <strong>(24%)<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All this lack of knowledge has the potential for real-life consequences. Over <strong>half of respondents<\/strong> (52%) think their knowledge gaps are preventing them from advocating for themselves in the doctor\u2019s office.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Fifty-four percent<\/strong> don\u2019t remember or haven\u2019t advice from a medical provider on alternative menstrual hygiene products other than pads and tampons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The spokesperson for INTIMINA added, <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This research shows that, even though it is 2020, women don\u2019t know enough about their bodies and as a result, are not able to take an active role in their care.
