And when you have a vagina, that means checking in with your friendly local <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/288354\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gynecologist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> every so often.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ve most likely already visited the gyno sometime after you started menstruating, you might have discussed birth control options, but now the real fun starts &#8211; pap smears!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What is a Pap Smear?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A pap smear, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Papanicolaou test, pap test, or cervical smear is a routine test done on women and people with vaginas to check the health of their cervix.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/cervix-101\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cervix<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a tiny doughnut-shaped organ that acts as the passageway between your uterus and vagina. It helps to keep sperm in &#8211; or out &#8211; of your body, let\u2019s menstrual blood out, creates mucus that tells you when you\u2019re <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/the-elusive-world-of-ovulation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ovulating<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and helps maintain your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/vaginal-flora\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vaginal flora<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Why Do I Need to Get a Pap Smear?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pap smears are done to detect if any cancerous or precancerous cervical cells have developed.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This test can be potentially lifesaving. By finding and removing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">precancerous cells, you can prevent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/cervical-screening-awareness-week-are-you-due-for-a-checkup\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cervical cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by up to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/11028584\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">95%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>When Do People Start Getting Pap Smears?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Providers typically recommend getting your first pap smear at age twenty-one and continuing to get them even up to age sixty-five.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can advocate to get one when before age twenty-one if you have been having sex for some time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s recommended to get a pap smear every three years before the age of thirty, and less often as you get older &#8211; as long as there are no signs of cervical cancer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re not sexually active, your chances of contracting HPV are minimal, but your provider will still recommend getting a pap smear, as there are other potential risk factors that can increase the chances of cervical cancer like smoking cigarettes and having a family history of it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What Happens During a Pap Smear?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ve made it to your appointment, now what on earth should you be expecting? How does one obtain cervical cells?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve got answers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You will have a brief chat with your gyno about your sexual history, health, and any other questions you have. They will then palpate your breasts and abdomen to feel for any lumps or bumps.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now the pap part.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They will have you put your legs up in foot rests, so they can get the right angle. Then use a lubricated speculum to be able to see up the vaginal canal to the cervix. Using a special stick or soft brush they will then collect cervical cells from the outside of your cervix.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These cells will then be sent to a lab for testing, and you will get your results within a couple of weeks in most cases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The test itself only lasts for a few minutes at most.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>How Can I Prepare for a Pap Smear?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I hope we didn\u2019t scare you away yet, because there are ways to prepare to make this whole process easier on you.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try to schedule your appointment when you\u2019re not on your period. It\u2019s ok to have a pap test while bleeding, but you want to avoid it if possible.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Come up with a list of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/big-questions-to-ask-your-gynecologist\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">questions to ask your gyno<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which may be about any infections you\u2019ve had or questions about birth control.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can take ibuprofen or another OTC pain reliever an hour before your appointment to help minimize discomfort.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can wear a panty liner, pad, or period panties in case you experience spotting after.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be sure to pee beforehand so that you don\u2019t have the added discomfort of a full bladder. If you are getting a routine STI test as well, they may ask you for a urine sample at your appointment.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wear comfy clothes to make it easier on yourself. You probably won\u2019t want to slide back into tight jeans after if you can avoid it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be prepared to be honest with your gyno about your body and sexual history.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disclose any history of sexual assault. If your gyno makes you feel uncomfortable in any way or does not seem trauma-informed, you can ask to switch providers.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What if My Results are \u201cAbnormal\u201d?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While abnormal test results can seem scary, they are fairly common.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You will typically have an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/what-exactly-is-hpv\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HPV<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> test at the same time, which looks for DNA from HPV in your cervical cells.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HPV is an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/sti-101-your-questions-answered\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">STI<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and is nothing to be ashamed of. It typically goes away on its own. There are more than 100 different <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/human-papillomavirus-(hpv)-and-cervical-cancer#:~:text=There%20are%20more%20than%20100,the%20onset%20of%20sexual%20activity.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">types<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of HPV, and at least fourteen of these are high risk, or possibly cancer-causing. Oftentimes when providers perform a pap smear, they are also testing for HPV, called a \u201cco-test\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your test is abnormal, then your doctor will ask you to test again in six months to a year to see if there are any cancerous HPV strains present.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In most cases, the cervical cells will regulate on their own, but you will probably have to have three back to back \u201cnormal tests\u201d about a year apart until you are considered in the clear.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tests can also come back as abnormal or unclear if you have a yeast infection, noncancerous cysts, or certain autoimmune diseases.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Things To Keep in Mind<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s possible to have a \u201cnormal\u201d test when cancerous cells are present, a \u201cfalse negative\u201d, as well as vice versa, \u201cfalse positive\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You will need a separate STI test, which will most likely come from a urine sample.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The HPV vaccine can protect against certain strains of HPV that may cause cervical cancer.
