A combination of nerves, excitement, and newness can send rushes of adrenaline through our bodies when going to a party or meeting a new person. This is totally normal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, sometimes these nerves can push someone over the edge to the realm of social anxiety.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social anxiety disorder<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0sometimes referred to as \u201csocial phobia\u201d,\u00a0 is a real, diagnosable mental health disorder that affects an estimated <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/health\/publications\/social-anxiety-disorder-more-than-just-shyness\/index.shtml#:~:text=Social%20anxiety%20disorder%20is%20not,his%20or%20her%20full%20potential.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seven percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of people in the U.S.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This disorder can make simple tasks like getting groceries or going to the post office a source of anxiety. People with social anxiety may have difficulty going to school or work, and avoid social situations. It\u2019s not uncommon for people with social anxiety to have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/panic-attacks\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20376021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">panic attacks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when they encounter a trigger. This is an incredibly scary and uncomfortable experience, that may hinder them from going about their daily lives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does this sound familiar to you?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Here are some signs you may be experiencing social anxiety:<\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Feeling \u201ctrapped\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This may be when you\u2019re speaking to someone, or anxious about going somewhere with people.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Inability to speak<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in certain situations. Feeling like your voice is stuck.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Panic attacks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or physical sensations when in certain triggering social situations. These can include dizziness, stomachache, difficulty breathing, rapid heartbeat, feeling tense, or an \u201cout of body\u201d sensation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Fear of being judged<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or the constant worry of being judged. You may constantly make assumptions about others\u2019 intentions towards or interpretations of you.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Feeling of being watched by others, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">like you\u2019re living in a fishbowl.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Difficulty dating, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or forming romantic and intimate relationships.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>History of emotional abuse, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from a parent, partner, or possibly from being bullied in school.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Avoiding eye contact.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Difficulty with small talk <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and daily conversations, or avoiding them altogether.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Physical reactions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like blushing, sweating, or shaking during conversations, or in anticipation of them.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Family history<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of social anxiety or other mental health disorders.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Feeling uncomfortable<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> around people you used to be fine with, like family or old friends.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social anxiety can manifest differently in everyone. Some people may only be triggered by certain scenarios or in certain settings, while for others it may be generalized. Either way, if it\u2019s keeping you from living a normal life, it\u2019s time to take the steps towards healing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Getting to The Root of It<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you feel like social anxiety is interfering with your ability to carry on conversations and develop meaningful relationships, first off &#8211; you didn\u2019t do anything wrong. You are absolutely worthy and capable of connecting with people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social anxiety is not a personality defect.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can start to understand your process with some self reflection.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When did these symptoms start?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you tell what feelings are underneath them? Low self worth? Wanting to be accepted? Difficulty with change?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What social settings are the most and least triggering for you?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What tools are most helpful when social anxiety comes up?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Self Healing Tools<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like any mental health disorder, you may find the most help in healing social anxiety by using a variety of methods &#8211; some of which you can do on your own.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tools like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/the-healing-powers-of-breathwork\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breathwork<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/working-from-home-simple-yoga-tips-for-your-body-and-mind\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yoga<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, meditation, gardening, being creative, spending time in nature, and anything else that helps you feel grounded, and regulates your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/22665-nervous-system.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nervous system<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, can also help you deal with social anxiety.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s just as important to take daily steps in helping you stay balanced, as it is to have tools to lean on when you feel triggered. Something as simple as breathing, reminding yourself that you are firmly planted on the earth, and repeating an affirmation like \u201cI am safe\u201d, can help ease you through moments of anxiety.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Outside Help<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there are plenty of ways you can practice self-healing tools, we absolutely encourage you to seek help from a skilled provider who knows how to support you through this process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given that social anxiety is a mental health disorder, your first step may be seeing a licensed mental health provider like a therapist or counselor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your provider may use a variety of modalities like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/mental-health\/emdr-what-is-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EMDR<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/tests-procedures\/cognitive-behavioral-therapy\/about\/pac-20384610\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cognitive behavioral therapy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They may recommend social anxiety support groups. In some cases, they may refer you to a psychiatrist who you can discuss the possibility of prescriptions like anti-anxiety medications or antidepressants with.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other holistic health professionals may be able to help you as well. Any provider that has experience in treating mental health issues can be useful when it comes to social anxiety.
