For a refresher, it\u2019s a chronic illness where your blood glucose (sugar) is too high. There are three types \u2013 Type 1, Type 2, and gestational diabetes. Diabetes is usually manageable with lifestyle changes, and possible insulin medication, but it can lead to possible long term health issues.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what makes gestational diabetes different?&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is Gestational Diabetes?&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), more commonly known as gestational <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/pregnancy\/diabetes-gestational.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is a form of diabetes that shows up in people who did not have diabetes before becoming pregnant. Affecting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/diabetes\/basics\/gestational.html#:~:text=Gestational%20diabetes%20is%20a%20type,pregnancy%20and%20a%20healthy%20baby.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2% to 10%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of pregnancies in the U.S., gestational diabetes typically develops between 24 to 28 weeks gestation. This is also the time your provider will most likely test your blood sugar for it, unless it is suspected earlier on, or you have a history of gestational diabetes with prior pregnancies.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just like other forms of diabetes, GDM hinders the body\u2019s ability to regulate blood sugar, causing it to be too high.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Risk Factors for Gestational Diabetes<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you had GDM in prior pregnancies, your chances of developing it in subsequent pregnancies increases. Gestational diabetes is recurring in an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/care.diabetesjournals.org\/content\/24\/4\/659#:~:text=It%20is%20estimated%20that%20gestational,pregnancy%20complicated%20by%20the%20disease.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">estimated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 30-69% of pregnancies, where the person had gestational diabetes with prior pregnancies.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/americanpregnancy.org\/healthy-pregnancy\/pregnancy-complications\/gestational-diabetes-855\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">risk factors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include pregnancy at an older age (over 35), a family history of diabetes, and excess weight before pregnancy.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms of Gestational Diabetes<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While not every person with gestational diabetes will have symptoms, they may experience unusual thirst and frequent urination, vaginal, bladder, and skin infections, nausea, fatigue, and blurred vision.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep in mind that with all the changes in your body, it can be hard to tell what may be a possible symptom, and what is a normal part of pregnancy.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnancy and Birth Complications<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gestational diabetes can lead to possible complications during pregnancy.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnancy-induced hypertension (high blood pressure), or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/preeclampsia-in-pregnancy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">preeclampsia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, occurs in about 10 to 30 percent of people with gestational diabetes. This can occur during pregnancy or postpartum and can lead to eclampsia. A more severe, and possibly life threatening form of high blood pressure. The only treatment for preeclampsia is delivery, which may necessitate the need for an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/whats-the-deal-with-labor-induction\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">induction<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or a planned Cesarean section.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with GDM may have an increased risk of an emergency C-section as well.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gestational diabetes may increase the chance of a baby with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/baby\/gestational-diabetes-you#1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">large birth weight<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can lead to possible birth complications like shoulder dystocias. Babies may also have low blood sugars (hypoglycemia) and mineral levels upon delivery. They may have a treatable condition called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/parenting\/baby\/digestive-diseases-jaundice\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">jaundice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that causes yellowing of the skin, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/gestational-diabetes\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20355339#:~:text=Babies%20born%20early%20to%20mothers,(hypoglycemia)%20shortly%20after%20birth.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">respiratory distress syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> upon delivery. The chance of preterm birth and stillbirth is also slightly increased.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people with gestational diabetes develop a condition called polyhydramnios, which is essentially excessive amniotic fluid around the baby. One of the other important steps you can take is getting your blood sugar tested regularly. You\u2019ll want to get your blood sugar tested between 6 to 12 weeks postpartum, and then every 1 to 3 years thereafter.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"drscroll\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are diagnosed with gestational diabetes, know that you didn\u2019t do anything wrong, and you can still have a totally healthy pregnancy and baby.
