We love it. And here at Intimina, we love to get down to the nitty-gritty science of it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examining what\u2019s going on physiologically when we\u2019re having sex, is not only fun to geek out on, but can help us have better sex by knowing how to work with the complexities of our bodies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That brings us to our topic at hand &#8211; sex and the nervous system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What is The Nervous System?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The human body is an incredibly intelligent piece of work. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/22665-nervous-system.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nervous system<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is essentially the command center of the body, with a sort of \u201celectrical wiring\u201d that regulates the brain, skeletal system, organs, and essentially every function of the body.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The central nervous system regulates the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. While the peripheral nervous system connects the CNS to the skin, limbs, and organs &#8211; including the genitals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can see how this complex network is important when it comes to sex.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Sex and Your Nervous System<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given that the nervous system controls so much of how our bodies work, it makes sense that it also has a huge impact on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/body-changes-when-horny\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">arousal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, connection, and experiencing orgasm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2917081\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">limbic system<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> helps regulate parts of the autonomic nervous system, which is responsible for regulating autonomic bodily responses like breathing, blood pressure, and pulse. Thought of as the \u201cprimitive\u201d area of the brain, the limbic system, also plays a role in physical drives and emotional processing &#8211; and is activated during sex.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While we might give a lot of rational thought to our sex lives (or not), the act itself is more instinctual and emotional than something that is thought out. The cerebral cortex, which is responsible for reasoning, becomes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/here-s-what-happens-to-your-brain-when-you-orgasm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">less active<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during sex.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sexual response across genders is not fully understood, yet some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.1111\/j.1365-2605.2004.00514.x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">researchers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggest that sexual hormones help integrate the body and autonomic sexual systems via the cerebrum, or part of the brain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In layman\u2019s terms, they are saying that arousal responses such as erections, engorgement, vaginal secretions, and orgasmic contractions work in the body as a response from the communication between our hormones and nervous system.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>When The Nervous System is Dysregulated<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes our nervous systems become dysregulated. Whether that be through <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/sex-after-trauma\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trauma<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, physical or mental stress, or an injury.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the nervous system isn\u2019t working optimally, it can affect how and when we become aroused, our sexual responses, our comfort levels in sex, and so much more. Much of the hormone regulation in our bodies is regulated by the nervous system. Which means if something is off, it can hinder your ability to have a thriving sex life. Even hormones like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/9211418\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oxytocin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, aka \u201cthe love hormone\u201d is under the whim of the nervous system, and its ability to function effectively.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adrenaline, aka the stress hormone, actually <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/journal-of-dairy-research\/article\/abs\/inhibitory-effect-of-adrenaline-on-oxytocin-release-in-the-ewe-during-the-milkejection-reflex\/6740FC12D262E267EABC094582837E48\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inhibits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> oxytocin. Given that oxytocin helps facilitate trust, sexual activity, and orgasm, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/how-holiday-stress-impacts-your-sex-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high amounts of stress<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hormones from a dysregulated nervous system, can make it difficult to feel connected and orgasm during sex.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>How to Calm The Nervous System for Better Sex<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, much of the nervous system\u2019s functions are out of our control, and much more complex than we can dive into in a short article. Scientists have yet to understand much of it!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That being said, the ways that we do understand its workings, and how that relates to sexual function, means being able to heal and strengthen what parts we can.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Living in a high-stress society that prioritizes production over relaxation can complicate our sex lives. One of the biggest ways to do this is by attempting to regulate stress levels and responses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the ways we can do this are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/the-healing-powers-of-breathwork\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breathwork<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and simple breathing exercises, like deep belly breaths throughout your day.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/yogic-sex-secrets\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yoga<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/orgasmic-meditation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meditation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and other movement-based activities.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/acupuncture\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acupuncture<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other holistic healing modalities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therapy, and mental health services.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spending time outdoors. A brisk walk in some fresh air can help destress you, and is a great way to connect with your body before having sex.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do things that bring you joy and a feeling of softness. The more you\u2019re able to tap into this in everyday moments, the easier it is when you\u2019re intimate.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/masturbation-benefits\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Masturbate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">! If having sex with another person brings you anxiety, practice becoming more present in your body and pleasure when it\u2019s just you and you.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ability to relax into the moment, allows us to experience more pleasure throughout life &#8211; especially when we\u2019re having sex.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Much like any other biological function, sex is a complicated act, that is partially driven by the electrical wiring that makes up our nervous system.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the risk of oversimplifying things, sex does not have to be complicated.
