{"id":20631,"date":"2021-12-15T12:53:06","date_gmt":"2021-12-15T11:53:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/?p=20631"},"modified":"2022-01-03T09:27:02","modified_gmt":"2022-01-03T08:27:02","slug":"emergency-hiv-prevention","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/emergency-hiv-prevention\/","title":{"rendered":"Emergency HIV Prevention"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the 1980s the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiv.gov\/hiv-basics\/overview\/about-hiv-and-aids\/what-are-hiv-and-aids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AIDS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> epidemic swept through communities, taking lives, and breaking hearts.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The LGBTQ+ communities were hit especially hard thanks in part to how <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/its-national-women-and-girls-hiv-aids-awareness-day\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HIV<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is transmitted and the varying levels of access to care that people had. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although it can still be incredibly scary and life-changing, an HIV diagnosis is no longer a death sentence. For people that live in areas that have access to proper health care, HIV can be managed so that people can go on living their lives. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That being said, no one wants to get HIV.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luckily, there are more and more ways to prevent its transmission \u2013 one of them being emergency HIV treatment.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before we get into what that looks like, you have to understand the basics of HIV and AIDS.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What is HIV?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Human immunodeficiency virus<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, more commonly known as HIV, attacks a person\u2019s immune cells, making it difficult for them to fight infections and diseases. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HIV is spread through blood, semen, and vaginal fluids, however, it isn\u2019t spread through saliva. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The virus is most commonly transmitted through vaginal and anal sex, as well as through sharing drug injection equipment. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although there are treatments available that allow people to live relatively long and healthy lives with HIV, there is not yet a cure. This means if you have it, you have it for life. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If HIV is left untreated, over time it can turn into AIDS, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What is AIDS?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AIDS is a disease that can develop from the virus HIV. Essentially, it\u2019s HIV in its last stages.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This happens when the virus badly damages the body\u2019s immune system, making it difficult for it to fight off even mild illnesses and infections.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once HIV develops into AIDS, it can still be treated, but without treatment, life expectancy falls to about one year. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like we said before, there are so more and more options these days for not only HIV treatment, but prevention.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These life-saving medical advances have led to a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thirty percent decline<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in new HIV infections globally since 2010. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s take a look at what that might look like in an &#8217;emergency situation.&#8217;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Emergency Transmission Prevention: PEP<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Life happens, and sometimes we\u2019re left in a situation where we have to adapt and use what we\u2019ve got. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Especially when it comes to preventing the transmission of life-altering <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/sti-101-your-questions-answered\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sexually transmitted infections<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like HIV.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you believe you may have been exposed to HIV, it\u2019s important to seek emergency preventative care.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The medication used for this is called PEP (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">post-exposure prophylaxis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). In an emergency, PEP must be started within 72 hours of possible exposure to HIV, however, it works best when started 24 hours after exposure.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After that, you take the medication daily for twenty-eight days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PEP<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> works by using a combination of three drugs that prevent HIV from making copies of itself and spreading through the body. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When taking PEP, it\u2019s imperative that you take it correctly and consistently for the full four-week course, and prevent exposure to HIV again while taking it. You\u2019ll also want to use condoms with sexual partners, and avoid sharing needles, syringes, and other drug equipment. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although PEP isn\u2019t 100% effective when used correctly and on time, it typically lowers someone\u2019s chance of getting HIV by more than 80%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Where Do You Get PEP?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re wondering where to get PEP, we\u2019re here to help.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are plenty of places where PEP can be obtained, here are a few:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emergency room doctor<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Urgent care provider<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Healthcare provider<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reproductive health care clinic\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Are There Any Side Effects?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people who take PEP may experience mild side effects and a general feeling of unwellness. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common side effects include stomach issues like nausea and vomiting, stomachache, and diarrhea. Other possible side effects include insomnia, tiredness, and headache.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Who Should Use PEP?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While anyone who has sex can potentially get HIV, it\u2019s not that common, and certain risk factors increase someone\u2019s susceptibility to the virus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you fall into any of these categories, you should have HIV prevention on your mind:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having another STI, like gonorrhea, can make it easier for the HIV virus to get through due to the lining of internal organs being weakened.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t use condoms, or don\u2019t use them consistently.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You use injectable drugs and share equipment with other people.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You have a sexual partner whose HIV status is positive or unknown.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You have unprotected anal sex. HIV is easier to transmit during anal sex because of the sensitive nature of the tissue.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You have been sexually assaulted.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You used a condom but it broke.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Possible workplace exposure to HIV, specifically if you work in healthcare.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Other Options for Protection<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are regularly exposed to HIV, PEP is probably not the best option for you. It\u2019s meant only for emergencies, and shouldn\u2019t be taken long term. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luckily there are other great options for more long-term use when it comes to HIV prevention, thanks to a medication called <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PrEP<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, pre-exposure prophylaxis. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While they aren\u2019t 100% effective, condoms can reduce the risk of HIV transmission by about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/9141163\/#:~:text=A%20reexamination%20of%20HIV%20seroconversion,are%20inconsistent%20or%20non%2Dusers.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">90 to 95%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although it\u2019s not out yet, researchers are working on a promising <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/almost-there-an-hiv-vaccine-when-will-it-be-available\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HIV vaccine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which will change the face of reproductive healthcare.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to sex, another important factor is regular testing and discussing testing with your sexual partners. Be sure to ask your healthcare provider to test for HIV.
