Let\u2019s find out!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What Are Hemorrhoids?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You most likely know what hemorrhoids are, or at least how they feel when you have one, but what are they exactly? This annoying and sometimes painful condition is marked by swollen and inflamed veins around your anus or the lower part of your rectum.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two kinds of hemorrhoids, external and internal. External ones form under the skin that surrounds your anus, while internal ones form in the lining of your anus and lower rectum.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Hemorrhoid Symptoms<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to hemorrhoids, usually when you know, you know. Still, some of the symptoms, like rectal bleeding, can be especially alarming. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think you might have developed your own case of piles?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some hemorrhoid symptoms to watch out for:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Itching around your anus.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain in the anus, especially when sitting \u2013 like we said, a pain in the butt.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bleeding from your rectum \u2013 this tends to happen more with internal hemorrhoids.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prolapse, which happens when the hemorrhoid falls through the opening of your anus.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">External hemorrhoids may cause uncomfortable lumps or swelling near your anus.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What Causes Hemorrhoids?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve had a hemorrhoid, it\u2019s nothing to be ashamed of. In fact, about <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50% of adults<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will have one by the time they reach age 50. So there\u2019s pretty decent odds that this information will come in handy one day if it\u2019s not already. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why are they so common? The sensitive tissue of the anus is susceptible to all sorts of changes, especially considering all that we put it through during our lifetimes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are the most common causes of hemorrhoids:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Too much pressure on veins around the anus. Here\u2019s how to prevent, treat and manage discomfort from hemorrhoids:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid too much straining or heavy lifting.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid rubbing, or itching as it can make symptoms worse.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treat any constipation through movement, diet, and taking gentle stool softeners if needed \u2013 psyllium husk is a common one.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eat a high fiber diet, think things like sweet potatoes, pears, and leafy greens.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drink plenty of fluids \u2013 especially water.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid sitting on the toilet for too long.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep good hygiene, but avoid using soap around the anus, as it can irritate hemorrhoids.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use an over-the-counter pain reliever if needed like acetaminophen, aspirin, or ibuprofen.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use OTC topical creams and ointments for itching and pain.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use a warm or cold compress on the area.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use witch hazel pads on your anus.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take warm baths or a sitz bath using a small tub filled with a few inches of water that you sit in.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Topical <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.herbalgram.org\/resources\/herbclip\/issues\/bin_310\/review44541\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">herbal medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> using plants like chamomile, yarrow, and neem.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your hemorrhoid persists despite your at home treatments, you may need to try an in office procedure. It\u2019s important to reach out to your healthcare provider if you experience rectal bleeding or have black bowel movements.
