Sugar tends to have a bad reputation, but it\u2019s a lot more complex of a topic than many people realize.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sugar is all around us. In our foods, drinks, medicine, and more. But what effect does that delicious fresh-baked cookie have on our energy levels? What about the banana you had before your workout? What\u2019s that doing to your brain? Sugar you elusive, delicious thing, we\u2019re going to get to the bottom of just how you affect the human body.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Why We Love Sugar<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why do we love sugar so much? You might be thinking \u201cBecause it\u2019s delicious!\u201d We absolutely agree, but what\u2019s going on below the surface?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before the industrialization of food, it makes sense why we would turn towards foods naturally high in sugar, like fruit. Simply put, sugar gives us quick energy. If food is a source of energy, it makes sense that we would turn toward the things that give us the most bang for our buck. Not to mention that sweetness also typically means that food is ripe and not going to make us sick.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, evolution doesn\u2019t work that fast, and the factors that drove our ancestors towards sugary foods are still at play. But with sugar so readily available, we need to be aware of the ways that it affects different parts of the body, and how we can have a healthy relationship with it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Different Types of Sugar<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a lot of confusion about different types of sugar and how they might affect us differently. So what\u2019s the deal?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are four different types of sugar:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glucose: Sugar found in your blood.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fructose: Sugar found in fruit.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sucrose: Table sugar that\u2019s added to foods to enhance color, texture, flavor, and shelf life. Sucrose adds calories without boosting nutritional value.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lactose: Sugar found in dairy.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another thing to pay attention to is added sugar versus naturally occurring sugars. Added sugar can be your standard table sugar but can also come from maple syrup, honey, corn syrup, and other sources. Natural sugars occur naturally in foods like fruit and milk. While the sugar itself might not add much nutritional value, these foods also tend to be high in minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Sugar and Your Brain<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The term \u201csugar high\u201d doesn\u2019t come out of nowhere. Consuming sweet foods activates the brain\u2019s reward system, releasing the feel-good neurotransmitter <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.semanticscholar.org\/paper\/Excessive-sugar-intake-alters-binding-to-dopamine-Colantuoni-Schwenker\/2c41ebfeb7c7cd972568e10960a625519bc418ce\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dopamine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Dopamine also happens to be related to addiction. You see where we\u2019re going with this.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excessive sugar consumption reinforces the neural pathways linked with the reward center and compulsive behavior, creating a tolerance to it much like what happens in drug addiction. Some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/food-nutrition\/experts-is-sugar-addictive-drug#What-is-added-sugar?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">experts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> believe that sugar could be just as addictive as many street drugs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eating too much sugar can also affect your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/balancing-your-blood-sugar-eating-for-fatigue\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood sugar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> levels, even if you\u2019re not <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/diabetes-in-women\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diabetic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Dysregulated blood sugar can throw a lot of things off in your body, especially when it comes to your brain. Too much sugar can affect <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hms.harvard.edu\/news-events\/publications-archive\/brain\/sugar-brain#:~:text=Brain%20functions%20such%20as%20thinking,communication%20between%20neurons%20breaks%20down.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cognitive functions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> including memory, thinking, and learning. It may also be impacting your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0149763418308613#bib0880\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by triggering disorders like anxiety and depression.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Sugar and Your Hormones<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sugar consumption is directly linked to hormone health. Your hormones are critical for all sorts of physiological functions from fertility to metabolism to managing stress. Too much of it can impact your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/whats-a-thyroid-disorder\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thyroid health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, leading to fatigue, weight gain, and brain fog. Do you see how all these things are related?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When we think of hormone health, we tend to think of periods and fertility. So how does sugar impact your reproductive health? High sugar consumption has been lined with an increase in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/pcos-polycystic-ovary-syndrome\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PCOS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> symptoms, and may significantly impact fertility.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drinking one soft drink high in sugar a day may decrease <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/articles\/2018\/soda-and-fertility\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">conception rates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in females by a quarter. This could be in part due to sugar\u2019s ability to impact egg quality.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Sugar and Your Skin<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We know how frustrating it can be to deal with skin issues like rashes and acne, well sugar may be partially to blame.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A diet high in sugar from refined carbs added sugar, and other sources may increase your risk of developing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28606553\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acne<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Part of this goes back to blood sugar and insulin levels which can spike with sugar consumption. This creates a cycle of increased oil production and inflammation, which can trigger acne.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s nothing wrong with aging, it\u2019s a part of being on this planet. That being said, we understand wanting to slow down the visible parts of getting older like wrinkles. A diet high in sugar may damage <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28420091\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">collagen and elastin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, causing the skin to age faster.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Other Ways Sugar Can Affect The Body<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eating too much sugar can affect a lot more than your brain, hormones, and skin.
