And because it is so diverse, it\u2019s difficult to give it a definition. It can be entirely unique from person to person.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also doesn\u2019t help that there are a seemingly endless list of things that can bring about anxiety or anxious feelings in general.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This makes it a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental health<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> issue that\u2019s rife, and those who suffer from it deserve attention and understanding\u2014including moms and moms-to-be.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You see, for many, the term \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/postpartum-depression-study\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">postpartum depression<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d sounds familiar. But feeling anxious instead of sad or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/do-you-have-pregnancy-anxiety\/\">depressed during <\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pregnancy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and after having a baby is actually quite common, yet hardly talked about.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is maternal anxiety?<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes maternal anxiety is merely considered to be a normal occurrence for pregnant women or new moms. It often includes a mental preoccupation with having a child.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But actually, it can be more serious than that\u2014it could become a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medical<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> condition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMental anxiety is anxiety that affects women during pregnancy, birth, and the first postnatal year,\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uk.linkedin.com\/in\/dr-catherine-green-93a32b61\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Catherine Green<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, psychologist. \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It stops you from doing things, and sucks the joy out of things. That\u2019s when it can become really distressing.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Green goes on to say:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are lots of different forms of anxiety. The typical themes in maternal anxiety tend to be worrying that something bad is going to happen, either to you or your baby, during pregnancy, or postnatally, or perhaps during the birth, or that there\u2019ll be some aspects of parenting that you won\u2019t manage to cope with or tolerate.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the main factors that bring about maternal anxiety?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10995-022-03546-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">qualitative study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was conducted by researchers Prikhidko and colleagues in which they spoke to 17 mothers for 30 to 60 minutes each.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They did this as a means to gather common concerns, and to look at underlying thought processes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once the interviews were complete, they were pooled and decoded, then organized into four overarching factors related to maternal anxiety.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4 factors related to maternal anxiety<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As per the above-mentioned study, the four factors related to maternal anxiety include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maternal insecurities and social comparison<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The balance between dependency and autonomy\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cultural considerations<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coping with anxiety<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Maternal insecurities and social comparison<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some mothers revealed that they were dealing with self-doubt and that they were questioning their <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">desire<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and motivation to be a good mother.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These mothers also felt as though there were social pressures to conform to ideals of motherhood, and had a fear of failure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They often asked themselves questions such as: \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Am I a good mother? <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Am I meeting my child\u2019s needs?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also within this category, these mothers admitted that they often felt confused with all of the different advice available online. They also felt as though <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/social-media-motherhood\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">social media often made them feel inferior as a mother<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The balance between dependency and autonomy\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This balance was not a fear based on themselves but rather, their child as they grow up.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, they feared the day their child would learn to drive, when they left for college, and other situations where they had more <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">autonomy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These mothers also experienced anxiety in situations in which they had no control. Things such as how others perceive their child, how their child gets treated, their child\u2019s character and morals, their dating failures, and peer pressure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They were worried that their child may make bad choices in life that may be permanent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Cultural considerations<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This factor looked at privilege versus social oppression. For example, racism was a huge source of anxiety for some of the mothers who, they themselves, had experienced discrimination.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This included things such as basic safety, and physical and mental health. They showed concern that their child may be ostracized or lonely because of how they were seen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then the theme of socioeconomic pressures was raised, and those who found themselves short on money often felt anxious for their child. They feared their child may not have equal opportunities and a good social standing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Coping with anxiety<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This theme was more so concerned about <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> these mothers dealt with anxiety pertaining to themselves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They expressed that they may be able to reduce or cope with their anxiety by trying to remember that some things were out of their control.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some also believed that their child may be negatively affected by their anxiety, so they wanted to try and reduce it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Others revealed that they relied on their religion in times of anxiety and stress.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then there was also the factor of generational <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trauma<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which many moms did not want to pass onto their child.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moving onto a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/the-british-journal-of-psychiatry\/article\/anxiety-disorders-in-mothers-and-their-children-prospective-longitudinal-community-study\/59428CAB2CF83C80FF5D2C48A5FB8A87\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">different study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, let\u2019s take a look at how a mother\u2019s anxiety could affect their child\u2019s mental health.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can mothers pass their anxiety onto their children?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/18378996\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2008 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 933 mother-child pairs were examined. The results showed that children of mothers who have an anxiety disorder were more likely to have one themselves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The statistics showed that 24.7% of the mothers had an anxiety disorder and 33% of the children did too. The most prevalent type of anxiety passed down from mother to child was generalized anxiety or social phobia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And then, a separate <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2773772?resultClick=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study conducted in 2018<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showed that mothers-to-be who suffered from anxiety ran the risk of passing it onto their fetuses which could change the neural connectivity in the womb. In other words. It could literally change the brain networks in the fetus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, this study found that stress, anxiety, or depression in pregnant mothers was associated with social, emotional, and behavioral problems in their children.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A possible solution? More mental health awareness!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0As <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/childrensnational.org\/research\/people\/catherine-limperopoulos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Catherine Limperopoulos<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, phD, says:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMental health problems remain taboo, especially in the peripartum period where the expectation is that this is a wonderful time in a woman\u2019s life. Many pregnant mothers aren\u2019t getting the support they need.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She continued to say:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cChanges at the systems level will be necessary to chip away at this critical public health problem and make sure that both mothers and babies thrive in the short and long term.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So moms and mothers-to-be, we hope you are supported throughout your journey to motherhood. Anxiety is not bad nor taboo, and seeking help will be beneficial for both you and your child.
