For most people, cholesterol has a negative connotation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which is understandable. According to the World Health Organization (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/data\/gho\/indicator-metadata-registry\/imr-details\/3236#:~:text=Overall%2C%20raised%20cholesterol%20is%20estimated,ischemic%20heart%20disease%20and%20stroke.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WHO<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), an estimated 39% of adult males and 40% of adult females have elevated cholesterol levels. They also estimate that high cholesterol levels account for about 4.5% of deaths annually across the globe. But that\u2019s not the whole picture.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reality is that cholesterol is widely misunderstood, and does not necessarily deserve its reputation. What\u2019s more important is to understand where this mentality comes from, what cholesterol is, and understand the good and bad it does for the human body.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What is cholesterol?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cholesterol is not some foreign substance wreaking havoc on your body, it\u2019s found in every one of your cells. This waxy, fat-like substance is needed to make vitamin D and hormones and helps you digest your food.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That being said, your body makes all the cholesterol it needs, but it is also found in many of the foods we eat, especially animal products.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>\u201cGood\u201d vs \u201cbad\u201d cholesterol<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two different types of lipoproteins that carry cholesterol throughout the body. High-density lipoproteins (HDL) are considered \u201cgood\u201d cholesterol, while low-density lipoproteins (LDL) are considered \u201cbad\u201d cholesterol.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HDL cholesterol has an important job in the body. It\u2019s responsible for carrying cholesterol back to your liver where it can be flushed from the body. Contrary to popular belief, high levels of HDL can even lower the risk of stroke and heart disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High levels of LDL on the other hand can lead to plaque, which is when LDL cholesterol builds up in the walls of your blood vessels. This plaque buildup is called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/atherosclerosis.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atherosclerosis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People often lump in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/encyclopedia\/content.aspx?contenttypeid=56&amp;contentid=2967\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">triglycerides<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with cholesterol. While they are both a type of lipids, triglycerides are a type of fat that helps provide the body with energy and store unused calories. Like cholesterol, high triglyceride levels can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The risks of high cholesterol<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember the plaque buildup that can come from high levels of LDL cholesterol? Over time, this plaque buildup can cause the insides of your blood vessels to become more narrow, which can restrict and block blood flow to your organs \u2013 including your heart.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Restricted blood flow to the heart can lead to serious complications including heart attacks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/-\/media\/Files\/Health-Topics\/Cholesterol\/Consequences-of-high-cholesterol.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Risks of high cholesterol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cardiovascular disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strokes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heart attack<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetes complications<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High blood pressure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/heartdisease\/PAD.htm#:~:text=Peripheral%20arterial%20disease%20(PAD)%20in,arteries%2C%20which%20is%20called%20atherosclerosis.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PAD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (peripheral artery disease)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How to manage your cholesterol<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While not all cholesterol is bad, high levels of bad cholesterol can be dangerous. You often don\u2019t know or don\u2019t have other symptoms of high cholesterol until you have a serious complication like a stroke or heart attack. That\u2019s why it\u2019s vital to take steps to manage your cholesterol levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Get checked<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are varying opinions about when to start getting your cholesterol checked, but most providers recommend starting early in life. The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cholesterol\/cholesterol_screening.htm#:~:text=Cholesterol%20should%20be%20checked%20starting,every%204%20to%206%20years.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) states that \u201cCholesterol should be checked starting early in life\u2014even children and adolescents should have their cholesterol checked.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most adults should have their cholesterol checked every four to six years, or more if they have heart disease, a family history of high cholesterol, or other health conditions that may be impacted by high cholesterol, like diabetes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Dietary changes<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foods high in saturated fats like highly processed foods, dairy, and red meat may increase your cholesterol levels. Eating a diet high in fiber and healthy unsaturated fats like olive oil, fatty fish, nuts, and seeds can be helpful in managing cholesterol levels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Stay active<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Physical activity levels can play a huge role in cholesterol and overall heart health. One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/news\/2021\/06\/02\/doctors-should-prescribe-exercise-for-adults-with-slightly-high-blood-pressure-cholesterol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that when compared to inactive people, people who are physically active have a 21% lower risk of developing cardiovascular disease and a 36% lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting regular exercise can be daunting or not realistic for everyone\u2019s body or lifestyle. Every little bit counts, but experts recommend 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise weekly. They also recommend at least two <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/wellness-and-prevention\/3-kinds-of-exercise-that-boost-heart-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">strength training<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sessions a week.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Avoid tobacco products<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The chemicals in cigarettes can cause damage to your heart and blood vessels and can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heartuk.org.uk\/healthy-living\/quit-smoking#:~:text=Does%20smoking%20cause%20high%20cholesterol,away%20from%20the%20artery%20walls.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">double your risk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of cardiovascular events. Smoking not only lowers your good cholesterol levels, it can also make your bad cholesterol \u201cstickier,\u201d making it more likely to cling to the walls of arteries and clog them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Manage stress levels<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stress plays a huge role in not only your mental health but your physical health as well. Some stress is normal, but not being able to manage your stress, or high levels of long term stress can cause high levels of the stress hormone cortisol.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/encyclopedia\/content.aspx?ContentTypeID=1&amp;ContentID=2171\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High cortisol levels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have been linked to increased levels of blood cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood pressure. Stress may even cause changes in the body that increase the buildup of plaque in the arteries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Be aware of your family history<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High cholesterol can also have a genetic component. About one in 250 people have a genetic disorder called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/genomics\/disease\/fh\/FH.htm#:~:text=Genetics%20of%20Familial%20Hypercholesterolemia,one%20of%20these%20three%20genes.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">familial hypercholesterolemia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (FH). This disorder causes an increased level of LDL cholesterol and can increase your risk of heart disease and the complications that come with it at a younger age.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have FH or if high cholesterol runs in your family, it\u2019s especially important to follow a heart healthy lifestyle. You may also need medication, like statins, to help control cholesterol levels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Your heart health<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cholesterol levels and heart health are not something to be taken lightly.
