However, advancements in fertility technology have given people more options when it comes to reproduction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/04-04-2023-1-in-6-people-globally-affected-by-infertility#:~:text=Around%2017.5%25%20of%20the%20adult,prevalence%20of%20infertility%20between%20regions.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Health Organization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (WHO), about one in six people experience infertility globally. These people greatly benefit from services like in-vitro fertilization (IVF). It\u2019s also more common these days for people to wait until they\u2019re older to have children.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, is there such a thing as too late when it comes to IVF? Can people who have reached menopause still use IVF? It\u2019s time to find out!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>About IVF<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before we explore the question of the day, let\u2019s have an IVF refresher. IVF, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/ivf-vs-iui\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in-vitro fertilization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is an assisted reproductive technology (ART), a fairly complex one at that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IVF takes an average of four to six weeks, but many people have to undergo several cycles. It involves using hormones to stimulate egg maturation before they are retrieved, fertilized, and transferred.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s a summary of the main steps of IVF:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Estrogen or birth control pills are often used first to help regulate the timing of your menstrual cycle.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ovarian stimulation injectable hormones are taken for eight to fourteen days to help encourage egg maturation. Your progress is monitored through ultrasounds and blood tests.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The egg retrieval is typically done under mild anesthesia, 36 hours after your final hormone injection known as the \u201ctrigger shot\u201d. Your provider guides a thin needle into your ovaries via your vagina. There is a suction device connected to the needle that pulls the eggs out of each follicle.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After retrieval, your fertility specialist will attempt to fertilize all the mature eggs that have been collected. This can be done with your partner\u2019s sperm or sperm from a donor. An average of 70% of mature eggs that have been collected will fertilize and become an embryo.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Embryos will develop over the next five to six days, with about 50% developing to the blastocyst stage.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Embryo transfer is done using fresh (three to seven days after egg retrieval) or frozen embryos. Frozen embryo transfers are more likely to be successful.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A successful embryo transfer results in pregnancy and hopefully a live birth.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/treatments\/22457-ivf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of people experiencing infertility will use IVF. People may also use it if they are queer, hoping to have a baby without a partner, or even after their normal fertility window has closed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-21919 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/ivf-process.png\" alt=\"what is the ivf process\" width=\"865\" height=\"485\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/ivf-process.png 865w, https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/ivf-process-487x273.png 487w, https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/ivf-process-768x431.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 865px) 100vw, 865px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Is IVF possible after menopause?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The short answer is yes, IVF is possible after menopause, and there have been a number of women who have done it successfully. The caveat is that they are not able to use their own eggs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once someone reaches menopause, they typically have less than 1,000 eggs left. Because of this, they\u2019ll have to use frozen donor eggs, meaning they\u2019ll skip the first three steps of the IVF process.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Donor eggs can come from someone they know, like a friend or family member. They may also be sourced from an egg donor program. You can be connected to egg donor programs through your fertility clinic. Sperm can come from your partner or from a donor as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If all goes well and you\u2019re able to obtain healthy embryos, then you can proceed with the embryo transfer and possible pregnancy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Why people undergo IVF after menopause<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IVF is an expensive procedure and can take multiple rounds before a successful pregnancy. So, why would someone wait to try it until after menopause?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are just a few of the many potential reasons:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prioritized their career in their reproductive years<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Went through early menopause due to health reasons<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Faced fertility issues earlier in life<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Waited to find a partner<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Never found a partner but still wanted to become pregnant<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was simply the right time<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Risks of IVF after menopause<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IVF and pregnancy have inherent risks no matter what age you are. Are there specific risks for postmenopausal women?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/14672478\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that mothers aged 40 and older had significantly higher risks of having babies with low birth weight and are preterm. They also had an increased risk of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/gestational-diabetes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gestational diabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, cardiac disease, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/preeclampsia-in-pregnancy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">preeclampsia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and maternal and neonatal morbidity. It\u2019s important to note that this study followed deliveries in the United States from 1997 to 1999, so it is a bit dated and may not reflect advancements in healthcare.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another study from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/21809262\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Columbia University Medical Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> followed women over the age of 50 who had IVF treatment and found that post-menopausal women and their babies had good outcomes comparable to those under age 42.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is limited research on IVF after menopause, which is why it\u2019s important to talk to your healthcare provider about the best option for you. Potential risks also depend on someone\u2019s age and any underlying health conditions they may have. If you\u2019re considering IVF after menopause, you\u2019ll likely have to undergo counseling and physical evaluations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Your decision<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There tends to be a lot of controversy around IVF after menopause, as there is with women\u2019s health in general. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As with anything having to do with reproductive health and fertility, undergoing IVF after menopause is a personal choice. If someone has the resources and the desire to go this route, then that is their decision to make.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are close to reaching menopause and want to explore your fertility options, we advise seeing a fertility specialist to see if you may still be able to have an egg retrieval.
