{"id":21921,"date":"2024-03-16T06:00:11","date_gmt":"2024-03-16T05:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/?p=21921"},"modified":"2024-03-17T05:57:50","modified_gmt":"2024-03-17T04:57:50","slug":"are-menstrual-clots-normal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/are-menstrual-clots-normal\/","title":{"rendered":"Are Menstrual Clots Normal?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite having a period month-in and month-out, there are still some questions that remain unanswered about this time of the month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This could partly be because one didn\u2019t receive adequate (or any) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/say-period-a-free-guide-for-florida-parents\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">education<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> regarding the menstrual cycle at home or at school, or<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because one notices something during \u201cthat time of the month\u201d that is out of the ordinary or maybe even frightening.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like menstrual clots \u2013 Are they normal and why do they happen?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are menstrual clots?<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During your monthly period, your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">uterine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> lining sheds which means that blood expels through the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vagina<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This lining is made up of blood, blood byproducts, mucus, and tissue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This blood and tissue is fairly thick, so the body releases anticoagulants which help thin the blood to make it easier to pass.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, if your blood flow outpaces your body\u2019s ability to produce anticoagulants, menstrual clots occur.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/staff\/14748-salena-zanotti\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Salena Zanotti<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, says:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBlood clots will form anytime you have a certain amount of blood that just sits there. Blood clots are supposed to happen to some degree, like when you cut yourself. But with period clots, what happens is if you\u2019re having a good amount of bleeding, it collects inside your uterus and as it sits there it will make a clot.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>If you\u2019re someone who experiences menstrual clots, seeing a specialist is a good idea if:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You pass multiple blood clots that are bigger than a quarter<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You have <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heavy menstrual bleeding<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (you change your tampon or pad every two hours or less) for several hours<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><b>Normal\u201d blood clots are usually:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smaller than a quarter<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infrequent\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Happen near the beginning of your period<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bright or dark red in appearance<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-21932 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/period-blood-clots-487x273.png\" alt=\"blood clots on period\" width=\"487\" height=\"273\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/period-blood-clots-487x273.png 487w, https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/period-blood-clots-768x431.png 768w, https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/period-blood-clots.png 865w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 487px) 100vw, 487px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Underlying causes of menstrual clots<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that we know what happens inside of the body when menstrual clots form and are released, are there any underlying causes to be aware of?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indeed, there are some physical and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hormonal<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> factors that can affect your blood flow and the formation of blood clots.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uterine obstructions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If one has a condition that enlarges the uterus, additional pressure could be placed on the uterine wall. This could lead to heavier bleeding and menstrual clots.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obstructions can also interfere with the uterus\u2019s ability to contract. That means that it\u2019ll take longer for the blood to exit the vagina so it could start to pool inside of the uterine cavity and form clots.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An imbalance of hormones<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout one\u2019s menstrual cycle, hormones are continuously changing, rising and falling. This does not mean that there is an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">imbalance<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> however. In fact, this combination of hormonal changes make for the perfect condition for conception.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But if someone suffers from an imbalance of hormones (perhaps from conditions such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/peri-what-perimenopause\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">perimenopause<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, stress, significant weight loss or gain), then there could be a change in how much blood is expelled, and if it forms clots or not.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adenomyosis<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This condition causes one\u2019s uterus lining to grow into the muscular wall of the uterus. And when it happens, the uterus can grow up to two to three times its normal size.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-21934 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/adenomyosis-e1710651091603-273x273.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"273\" height=\"273\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/adenomyosis-e1710651091603-273x273.png 273w, https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/adenomyosis-e1710651091603-100x100.png 100w, https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/adenomyosis-e1710651091603.png 484w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 273px) 100vw, 273px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/what-is-adenomyosis\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adenomyosis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the endometrial lining and the uterine wall can be much thicker than normal. This, in turn, can result in heavier periods and blood clotting.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enlarged Uterus<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If one has a bigger <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">uterus<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (oftentime after pregnancy), it has a bigger space for blood to pool before it is expelled.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means that blood clots may form as the blood sits inside of the uterus, waiting to exit the body.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miscarriage\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the unfortunate event of a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">miscarriage<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it is common to expel a lot of blood and blood clots.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But if a person does not know that they\u2019re pregnant, they may just think it is a heavy period.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thyroid issues\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your thyroid is a gland in your neck, and it\u2019s responsible for producing and distributing hormones. It\u2019s a condition that causes the tissue of the uterine lining to grow outside of the uterus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If one is living with endometriosis, they may experience heavier and more painful periods accompanied with blood clots.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to diagnose menstrual clots<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are experiencing menstrual clots frequently that are bigger than a quarter, the first step would be to visit your healthcare provider.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They will ask you several questions about your cycle as well as things that may affect your cycle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, they may ask you if you\u2019ve ever had pelvic surgeries, if you use <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/how-does-using-birth-control-affect-your-period\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">birth control<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or if you\u2019ve ever been pregnant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After this, they may run some blood tests to look for any hormonal imbalances. An intrauterine device (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/everything-you-need-to-know-about-your-iud-and-sex\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IUD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), for example, can reduce the amount of period blood by up to 90%. And the birth control pill could reduce it by up to 50%.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Medication:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Medicine that belongs to the class of drugs known as antifibrinolytics could have a positive effect when it comes to menstrual clotting. A healthcare provider might also suggest that you take nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, which\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can aid in less bleeding and more comfort.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Surgery: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A dilation and curettage (D and C) procedure is sometimes done after child birth or a miscarriage. It can also be done as a means to discover the cause of heavy menstruation and blood clots. This procedure won\u2019t cure heavy bleeding, but it could provide less bleeding for a few months. Another surgery some may opt for is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/what-is-a-hysterectomy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hysterectomy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
