It\u2019s important to be cautious about what you put into your body during pregnancy and t<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here are some general recommendations on what to avoid, but some over-the-counter medications are a gray area. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One medication that some healthcare providers recommend during pregnancy is aspirin.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This may come as a surprise, but aspirin used during pregnancy is intended for one specific reason &#8211; to prevent preeclampsia. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s explore how aspirin may help prevent preeclampsia, as well as the potential risks of using it during pregnancy. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Understanding Preeclampsia<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main use of aspirin during pregnancy is to prevent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/preeclampsia-in-pregnancy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">preeclampsia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 the medical term for those with high blood pressure and protein in urine during pregnancy. It affects between <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9723483\/#:~:text=According%20to%20the%20World%20Health,is%200.4%25%20%5B10%5D.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2%-10%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of pregnancies globally.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High blood pressure and hypertension are fairly common, and those with preeclampsia are typically able to have healthy pregnancies by taking steps to regulate blood pressure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms of preeclampsia include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vomiting or nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Persistent headache<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain in the upper stomach<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swelling in the hands or face<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vision changes including seeing spots or blurry vision<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In some cases, preeclampsia can develop into eclampsia, a potentially life-threatening medical emergency that can cause seizures, blood clotting issues, stroke, and kidney and liver abnormalities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can also lead to low birth weight and premature birth in babies. In the United States, about one out of every five medically induced premature births is in pregnancies with preeclampsia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People at a high or moderate risk of preeclampsia include those with:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A history of preeclampsia<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronic kidney disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Autoimmune diseases such as lupus<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 1 or type 2 diabetes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronic hypertension (high blood pressure)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Family history of preeclampsia<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnant with multiples<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BMI over 30<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/ivf-vs-iui\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IVF pregnancies<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnancy over the age of 35<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In certain places, especially the United States, there are other socio-economic factors that can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/blog\/preventing-preeclampsia-may-be-as-simple-as-taking-an-aspirin-202111092634\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increase the risk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of developing preeclampsia, like race, environmental stress and access to healthcare.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The Benefits of Aspirin During Pregnancy<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although preeclampsia can be managed in most cases, it could lead to pregnancy complication. That\u2019s where aspirin comes in. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acog.org\/clinical\/clinical-guidance\/committee-opinion\/articles\/2018\/07\/low-dose-aspirin-use-during-pregnancy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low daily aspirin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> use during pregnancy has been shown to prevent or delay the onset of preeclampsia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is most often used in people with a history of early-onset preeclampsia or those who have had preterm deliveries at less than 34 weeks gestation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does aspirin help to prevent preeclampsia? <\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers aren\u2019t sure exactly, but they do have some theories. In addition to being antiinflammatory, aspirin also has antiplatelet properties, meaning it stops blood cells, or platelets, from sticking together and forming blood clots.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aspirin also helps to reduce the production of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uth.edu\/news\/story.htm?id=083b33f9-9b1a-4028-9b9f-138556ce99d3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thromboxane A2<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a hormone that is believed to increase someone\u2019s risk of preeclampsia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Risks of Aspirin Use During Pregnancy<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As with any new medication, especially one taken during pregnancy, it\u2019s important to know the potential risks of aspirin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research shows that a daily low dose (81 mg) of aspirin is considered safe during pregnancy. The potential risks are low and are less than the risks of preeclampsia for those with a history of the disorder. Studies have found no increased risk of fetal or neonatal effects in babies who were exposed to aspirin while in utero.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to note that aspirin should NOT be used for the prevention of early pregnancy loss and is not recommended for prior unexplained stillbirth without having other preeclampsia risk factors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain groups of people should avoid aspirin use in pregnancy:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those with an aspirin allergy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypersensitivities to other salicylates<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypersensitivity or allergies to NSAIDs (ibuprofen and naproxen)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with nasal polyps<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">History of gastrointestinal bleeding<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those with peptic ulcer disease<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are potential risks of regular aspirin use. Consuming aspirin daily for more than five years has been associated with an increased risk of gastrointestinal and cerebral bleeding episodes in non-pregnant individuals. It\u2019s important to note that this was at 300 mg a day which is more than three times the amount recommended in pregnancy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>How To Use Aspirin During Pregnancy<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The recommended daily dose of asprin during pregnancy is 81 mg, which is considered a low dose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experts recommend starting daily use at the end of the first trimester, but there is some conflicting information about the best time to start aspirin during pregnancy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generally speaking, it\u2019s recommended to start between 12 and 28 weeks gestation. Some experts claim that it\u2019s best to start before 16 weeks gestation and continue use until delivery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27640943\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> support this claim, finding that significant reductions in severe preeclampsia only occurred in patients who started low-dose aspirin before 16 weeks of gestation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Again, there are conflicting studies about whether this greatly impacts the effectiveness of aspirin against preeclampsia. Most providers recommend continuing aspirin use until birth, with little apparent benefits of stopping in the last trimester.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preeclampsia is a potentially serious medical condition that can affect both the baby and mother.
