{"id":21940,"date":"2024-03-23T05:32:54","date_gmt":"2024-03-23T04:32:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/?p=21940"},"modified":"2024-03-23T05:33:45","modified_gmt":"2024-03-23T04:33:45","slug":"what-is-period-stigma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/what-is-period-stigma\/","title":{"rendered":"What Is Period Stigma?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Period stigma may just sound like something unfair but actually, there are harmful consequences associated with it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And because it can come about in a variety of ways, many of which lead to a lower quality of life, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">illnesses<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and worse, these societal issues are widespread and often debilitating.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This shouldn\u2019t be the case when in fact, period stigma is merely a product of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">myths<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, miscommunication, misconceptions, and misinformation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It doesn\u2019t serve a useful purpose at all but rather, harms those who suffer because of it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After all, menstruation is a normal, natural, and healthy part of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/common-reproductive-health-terms-a-z\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reproductive<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cycle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, let\u2019s talk about period stigma, how it affects some menstruating women, and how everyone could work towards making a change.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Is period stigma?<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Period stigma is a broad term for the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">discrimination<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> faced by those who menstruate. And there are many different ways that this discrimination can read its ugly head.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To name a few: lack of access to sanitation supplies, financial difficulties, reduced <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">education<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and less job opportunities, verbal shaming such as using the words \u201cdirty\u201d or \u201cunclean\u201d, and women feeling embarrassed or ashamed of their period.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the bigger scheme of things however, how does period stigma affect the women who menstruate?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The harmful effects of period stigma<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women feeling <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">embarrassed and ashamed<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, being called names because of their period, and not having proper access to menstrual products is only the tip of the iceberg.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are so many profoundly harmful effects of period stigma that can change the trajectory of people\u2019s lives for the worse.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Here are some of the harmful effects of period stigma:<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Implications due to a lack of education<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did you know that 1 in 10 girls across Africa <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalcitizen.org\/en\/content\/menstrual-hygiene-day-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">miss school during their period (10-20% of school days<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)? This can carry a number of negative consequences.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, many school-going girls might decide to drop out of school altogether because they&#8217;re falling behind and unable to get the adequate education they need with so many missed days.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This could lead to a greater risk of them becoming child brides and\/or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">falling pregnant<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not just that, but it\u2019s highly likely that they\u2019ll struggle to find work because of their lower levels of education.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The result is often life-threatening economic issues and hardships, and possibly the cycle repeating itself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Unsafe &amp; unsanitary living conditions aka period poverty<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In some developing countries, there is a lack of or no access to adequate toilets or clean water. And while this affects everyone involved, girls and women have an even bigger burden to carry as they\u2019re unable to manage their monthly period in a safe and hygienic way.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, many of these developing countries lack a reliable source of supplies and solutions, making it difficult for girls and women to leave home for school or work. This can have major implications on one\u2019s mental and physical health, among other things.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the thing is, period poverty exists in both developing and developed countries. For many, choosing between <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">food<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or menstrual products is a reality. And for others, access to menstrual hygiene products and facilities is not even an option.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/news\/feature\/2018\/05\/25\/menstrual-hygiene-management\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Bank<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> estimates that at least 500 million women and girls across the globe don\u2019t have access to things they need to manage their menstruation.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/en\/digital-library\/multimedia\/2019\/10\/infographic-periods\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UN Women<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> added to the consequences of period poverty with their statistics. It was found that, in 2019, 1.25 billion women and girls had no access to a safe, private toilet, and 526 million did not have a toilet at all.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Truth be told, this is a human rights issue, resulting in a lack of dignity and the removal of the right to bodily <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/reproductive-autonomy-what-is-a-free-birth\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">autonomy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Medical implications<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/penny-mordaunt-launches-new-funds-to-tackle-period-poverty-globally\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">estimated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that half of women and girls who lack access to period products and women\u2019s health services in some developing countries often have to make use of rags, grass, or paper during menstruation. This itself can be dangerous and can cause infections.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, female genital mutilation (FGM) is still rife in some African countries today. This will contribute to the dangers and medical issues associated with not having the adequate products and facilities during <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">menstruation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And then let\u2019s talk about ancient rituals that take place in some countries. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/Documents\/Issues\/Water\/ContributionsStigma\/others\/field_bulletin_-_issue1_april_2011_-_chaupadi_in_far-west.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chhaupadi<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for example is practiced in some parts of rural Nepal and involves girls and women being shunned to huts sheds during their period because menstruation is seen as \u201cbad luck\u201d. There, they have no access to the things they need, which can lead to a range of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health issues<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as well as physical and psychological hardships.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite this however, many people around the world still view things such as menstruation and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PMS<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a joke, telling girls and women that they\u2019re \u201cmoody\u201d because it&#8217;s \u201cthat time of the month\u201d when in fact, it is a medical issue <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a women&#8217;s health issue.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Body shaming<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Period stigma can have a profoundly negative effect on the way in which a girl or woman sees herself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, this stigma can lead to decreased levels of physical and mental well-being, lower levels of sexual satisfaction and expectations, and make them feel as if they have a lower social status.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is only made worse by certain rituals that see menstruation as \u201cdirty\u201d or \u201cunclean\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take religion for example. There is a traditional Jewish term called \u201cniddah\u201d which is when a woman sleeps separately from her husband when she has her period. And in Islam, women are seen as \u201cimpure\u201d during menstruation and are thus excused from prayers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And then there are harmful myths that have body shaming effects. One being that some still believe that using a tampon will take away a girl\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">virginity<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Shame &amp; embarrassment\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While we just touched on body shaming, there is more to be said here: period shaming.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an article written by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/digitaleducation.stanford.edu\/period-stigma-and-unacknowledged-system-oppression#:~:text=Valerie%20Seibert's%20article%20%E2%80%9CNearly%20Half,frequent%20comments%20women%20receive%20regarding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Valerie Seibert<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> called, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly Half of Women Have Experienced \u2018Period Shaming\u2019, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it mentions that \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">58 percent of women have felt a sense of embarrassment simply because they were on their period.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take period product advertisements for example. Are these adverts a realistic depiction of monthly periods?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Firstly, not only do the women in these ads look as though they love their period, but the text in menstrual ads often portray themes of secrecy, shame, and purity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kotex<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a popular brand of female hygiene products, once said in their 2013 ad, \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t worry. Even your biggest crush won\u2019t know you\u2019re on your period\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, of course, girls and women have been socialized to believe that asking for, using, or buying <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">menstrual products<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is embarrassing and shameful.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think about school girls who try to hide their pads or tampons by putting them up their sleeve before leaving class to visit the restroom.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or what about women at work who feel as though they have to do the same, or feel some form of embarrassment when they take a small bag with them to the bathroom.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The thing about period shaming though, is that it prevents open conversations at school, at home, and in the media. This, in turn, is preventing acceptance and creating more harm for a bodily function that is healthy and necessary.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Tampon tax<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then of course, one should consider something called \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/how-inflation-is-making-your-period-more-expensive\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tampon tax<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d. In some countries, period products are seen as a luxury or a non-essential item for VAT purposes. FYI: it\u2019s not! For that reason, menstrual products are even more expensive than they should be.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And while many countries have now abolished tampon tax, it is still \u201ca thing\u201d in some countries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why? Well, one reason is that VAT can be an important source of revenue for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">governments<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Think about that for a minute.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the end of the day, there\u2019s a lot that can be done to help remove period stigma.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For one, adequate period education in schools for all <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">genders<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, open conversations with parents and their children (including their sons), and avoiding code words such as \u201cAunt Flo\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But also, advocating for improved access to menstrual products, better facilities, and better support.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone can play a role in trying to remove period stigma and to celebrate this life-giving monthly occurrence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Period stigma may just sound like something unfair but actually, there are harmful consequences associated with it.\u00a0 And because it can come about in a variety of ways, many of&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":39,"featured_media":21563,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"inline_featured_image":false},"categories":[2],"tags":[47,199,203],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.12 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>What is Period Stigma and How Does it Affect Girls and Women?<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"There are many negative implications of period stigma.
