Dementia has a way of taking your loved one from you even when they\u2019re still alive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the World Health Organization, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/dementia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WHO<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <strong>dementia is the 7th leading cause of death<\/strong> and one of the major causes of disability among older people across the globe. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dementia is not only more common in women, but women also provide 70% of care hours for people with dementia, meaning <strong>it affects women disproportionately whether they are patients or caregivers<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With dementia being a reality for many older people and the loved ones who care for them, it\u2019s important to consider what may be behind it. More and more research has linked dementia with insulin resistance and diabetes. Some experts even call it the \u201cthird type of diabetes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Dementia Overview<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dementia isn\u2019t one specific condition, but rather <strong>a term for several diseases that can impact someone\u2019s thinking and memory<\/strong>, as well as their ability to perform every task. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It mainly affects people who are <strong>65 and older<\/strong> and tends to get worse over time. Dementia can also cause changes in mood and behavior, and those with it may eventually have difficulty moving around, going to the bathroom, and eating and drinking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a wide range of diseases and injuries that can cause someone to develop dementia, the most common being <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/aging\/aginginfo\/alzheimers.htm#:~:text=Alzheimer's%20disease%20is%20the%20most,thought%2C%20memory%2C%20and%20language.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alzheimer&#8217;s disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Dementia can also be caused by strokes, brain injuries, HIV, vascular dementia, and nutritional deficiencies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms of dementia can vary widely between individuals and at different stages of the disease. Things like <strong>high blood pressure, smoking, high levels of alcohol consumption, social isolation, depression, and even diabetes can all increase the risk of dementia<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Diabetes Overview<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now a quick pivot to the basics of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/diabetes-in-women\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before we explore its relationship to dementia. There are three main types of diabetes, <strong>type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes<\/strong> which happens during pregnancy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All forms of diabetes <strong>impact the body\u2019s ability to use insulin<\/strong>. Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood sugar by entering the body\u2019s cells for energy and signaling the liver to store blood sugar for later use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Type 1 diabetes is generally considered an autoimmune disease<\/strong> that causes the body to stop creating insulin. This type is less common and is more likely to be diagnosed in children or young adults, although it can develop at any age. People with type 1 diabetes need insulin to live.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Type 2 diabetes<\/strong> is when the body doesn\u2019t use insulin well and has difficulty regulating blood sugar levels. It <strong>is typically caused by lifestyle factors<\/strong>. Those with type 2 diabetes can often manage the condition with lifestyle changes but may need to take insulin medication as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The Link Between Dementia and Diabetes<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s been known that diabetes can lead to cognitive impairment, but new <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1568163719300157?via%3Dihub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that diabetes can increase someone\u2019s risk of developing dementia. One study even found that those with prediabetes also have a higher risk of dementia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another longitudinal <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama\/article-abstract\/2779197\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that not only does diabetes increase someone\u2019s risk of developing dementia, but age also plays a role. <strong>Researchers found that diabetes onset at a younger age significantly increased someone\u2019s chance of developing dementia later in life.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do these seemingly unrelated diseases have to do with each other? Researchers and medical professionals aren\u2019t exactly sure how diabetes can increase dementia rates, but they have some ideas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>How Diabetes May Lead to Dementia<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll remember that diabetes affects the body\u2019s ability to produce or use insulin correctly. Besides playing a key role in blood sugar regulation, <strong>insulin has also been identified as a key player in cognitive processes like memory<\/strong>. Insulin is likely transported into the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5111529\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">central nervous system<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the brain through the blood-brain barrier.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While most insulin is produced in the pancreas, the brain may create it as well. Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) may impact insulin in the brain, which can potentially damage the hippocampus, the part of the brain responsible for memory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a known link between diabetes and heart or cardiovascular disease. Heart disease can increase the risk of stroke, which can lead to dementia. This explanation doesn\u2019t paint the whole picture, as people with cardiovascular disease have an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/alz-journals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1016\/j.jalz.2019.09.003\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased risk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of developing dementia without having had a stroke.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jcem\/article\/102\/12\/4343\/4604942\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">link<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between diabetes and dementia has to do with oxygen and nutrition in the brain. Over time, <strong>diabetes can narrow the capillaries and arteries in the body. These are essential pathways that deliver oxygen and nutrients throughout the body, including the brain.<\/strong> Combined with high blood pressure and cholesterol, this can increase the risk of vascular dementia caused by damage to the blood vessels in the brain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is also a theory that diabetes can directly cause Alzheimer\u2019s disease. Researchers explain that <strong>elevated blood sugar levels can increase a naturally occurring protein in the brain known as <\/strong><\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6008657\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">beta-amyloid<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>.<\/strong> This protein is a sticky substance, and excess of it can create plaques or clumps in the brain that are characteristic of Alzheimer\u2019s disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Preventing Dementia and Diabetes<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over a five-year span, older adults with type 2 diabetes may experience <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5111529\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cognitive decline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at double the rate of those without it. Luckily, <strong>there are many ways to reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes<\/strong> or be able to manage symptoms if you\u2019ve already been diagnosed with it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eat plenty of dietary fiber, easily found in fruits, vegetables, and legumes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Refrain from using tobacco products<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Limit alcohol consumption<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Limit added sugar and refined carbohydrates<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get regular physical activity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manage weight if needed<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eat healthy fats and proteins<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people may need to use medications like insulin or metformin to help manage diabetes symptoms. The medication pioglitazone which helps your body better use insulin showed a 47% risk of dementia in patients with diabetes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dementia impacts not only those diagnosed with it but all of their loved ones and caretakers.
