You know, things such as getting a Pap smear, a cervical exam, possibly even an ultrasound. All these things are imperative for women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FYI: if you\u2019ve had or are having sexual skin-to-skin contact, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/are-pap-smears-necessary\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">regular Pap smears<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are recommended every three years from the age of 25.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With that comes the question \u2013 can you get a Pap smear while you\u2019re on your period?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What a Pap Smear Consists Of<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Pap smear, sometimes called a Pap test, is a procedure that tests for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/cervical-screenings\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cervical cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in women.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To get a Pap smear, you need to visit your preferred gynecologist who will ask you to change into a robe. Then, you&#8217;ll lay back on a chair, placing your feet into two stirrups. Y<\/span>our gynecologist will use a speculum to open up your vagina so that the cervix can be seen.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A small brush is then inserted into the vagina to gather cells from the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cervix<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These cells are sent to a laboratory to be tested for any abnormalities. A<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bnormalities can include signs of cervical cancer and cellular changes (aka pre-cancers) that can be caused by the human papillomavirus (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/what-exactly-is-hpv\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HPV<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, some gynecologists will do an HPV test at the same time as your Pap smear by taking samples outside of your cervix.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you get a Pap smear while on your period?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an ideal world, you would be able to have a predictable period so that you could organize your life around it, but this isn&#8217;t always the case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Making an appointment with a gynecologist for a Pap smear, especially far in advance, can be difficult because you may not know if you\u2019ll have your period during this time. So, if you do get it, can you still go?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s entirely up to you and your comfort level. You most certainly can get a Pap smear while on your period\u2014your gynecologist has seen it all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some patients apologize for coming in on their period. But I\u2019m not bothered by it at all,\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/askdrgreves.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christine Greves, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">., an OB-GYN.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To add to this. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.mountsinai.org\/rebecca-c-brightman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Rebecca C. Brightman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, says: &#8220;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pap tests are typically liquid-based cytology evaluations with the cervical cells placed in solution, and cervical cells can then be separated from the blood in the lab to allow for proper analysis.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, it is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">easier<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to get a Pap smear when you aren&#8217;t on your period. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medicine.yale.edu\/profile\/maryjane_minkin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mary Jane Minkin, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA lot of blood might obscure some of the details of the cells, which may make it hard to read.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have a heavy period, a simple call to your doctor\u2019s office could offer you some advice. Some doctors do like to err on the side of caution and ask you to reschedule, and some are happy and willing to do the exam.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere&#8217;s no way to predict which results will or won&#8217;t be affected,&#8221; <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medicine.yale.edu\/profile\/maryjane-minkin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Mary Jane Minkin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simply put \u2013 yes, you can get a Pap smear while on your period, but some doctors may recommend against it if your period is extremely heavy. This is solely based on the fact that it may be difficult to study the cells and provide a confident result.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s the best time in your cycle to get a Pap smear?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that we\u2019ve covered the question of if you can get a Pap smear on your period, let\u2019s look at it from a different angle: what is the best time in your cycle to get a Pap smear?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There isn\u2019t a \u201cbest time\u201d to get your Pap smear. Technology is so advanced and the test is so sensitive that it doesn\u2019t matter what time of your cycle you choose to have the exam.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One thing to note, however, is to refrain from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sexual intercourse<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for at least 48 hours before a Pap smear. Even sex using a condom can affect the test results. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Condom<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or no condom, intercourse can cause inflammation or irritation of the vaginal tissue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also best to avoid oral sex and penetrative masturbation during this same 48-hour window.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, one should refrain from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/the-dangers-of-douching\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">douching<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and using vaginal medicine or spermicidal foams, creams, or jellies for two to three days before having a Pap smear.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abnormal Pap Smear Results\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a few reasons why you may get an abnormal Pap smear result.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes, the test may come back inconclusive. This could mean that there are atypical cells of undetermined significance, but this isn\u2019t necessarily something to worry about. It often means that the cells are neither normal nor abnormal, according to the statistical threshold.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your exam results show abnormal results, it doesn\u2019t automatically mean cancer. It could be:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inflammation\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infection\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Herpes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trichomoniasis\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HPV<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depending on how your cells look under a microscope, your doctor may want to do a cervical biopsy or an additional Pap smear.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regardless of your results, however, it\u2019s important to talk to your doctor about your results as they are the professional and can explain them to you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As if getting a monthly period isn\u2019t bad enough, add one more thing into the mix: women\u2019s reproductive health.
