Is it something to worry about?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Known as &#8220;postcoital bleeding,&#8221; bleeding after sex may be caused by a plethora of reasons. And while most of the time it&#8217;s nothing to worry about, it&#8217;s something to pay attention to.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Postcoital bleeding isn&#8217;t linked to your period and typically isn&#8217;t painful. If you have pain during or after sex, you may have another condition like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/understanding-vaginismus-whats-going-on-down-there\/\">vaginismus<\/a> or low estrogen levels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We dive into the causes of bleeding after sex and when you should seek advice from a health professional.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pelvic Inflammatory Disease or an STI<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having an inflamed cervix, called cervicitis, can cause bleeding after sex. An inflamed cervix may be due to an infection or an STI like chlamydia, gonorrhea, or Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you experience an odor, itching, pain, or burning sensation, contact your doctor immediately for an STI test.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaginal Dryness and Tearing<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you&#8217;ve just had rough, deep, or long-lasting sex, you may notice blood. This is because you&#8217;ve probably experienced minor tearing of the vaginal walls. This may be because of a lack of lubrication but could also be due to long fingernails (so make sure your partner is trimming and keeping you safe!).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you&#8217;ve experienced a vagina laceration, the bleeding is usually short-term and the blood is bright red.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When a woman is in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/peri-what-perimenopause\/\">perimenopause<\/a>, which is the years leading up to menopause, estrogen levels begin to rapidly drop. This causes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/vaginal-atrophy-solutions\/\">atrophy<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/vaginal-dryness-causes-and-treatments\/\">vaginal dryness<\/a>, leading to more chances of bleeding after sex.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s recommended to always use lube \u2014 no matter what your age \u2014 during sex, as it reduces your chances of tearing and dryness, and makes sex feel better in general. Use a water-based lube when using a condom or silicone sex toy, or a silicone-based lubricant if you&#8217;re looking for long-lasting lubrication.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/postmenopausal-bleeding\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">post-menopausal woman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a doctor may prescribe an estrogen cream since the vaginal lining is thin and prone to inflammation, bleeding, and intense pain during sex.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other reasons for vaginal dryness include breastfeeding, allergies, antidepressants, perimenopause, cancer treatment, over-douching, and stress.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IUD<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/everything-you-need-to-know-about-your-iud-and-sex\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">having your IUD inserted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you may notice some light bleeding. Some people have even reported that they&#8217;ve experienced bleeding upwards of a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwmedicine.org\/sites\/stevie\/files\/2018-11\/IUD-Aftercare-Instructions.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">few months after insertion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as the body adjusts. Sex may irritate or jostle the IUD which can result in bleeding as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you&#8217;ve noticed any changes with your IUD \u2014 pain or discomfort for your partner \u2014 visit your doctor to make sure the IUD has not been dislodged.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benign Growths<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typically one to two centimeters in size, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/what-are-cervical-polyps\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cervical polyps<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, are non-cancerous and benign growths on the cervix. During intercourse, polyps may bleed. A doctor can remove them during a polypectomy during your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/cervical-screenings\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yearly Pap test<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strenuous exercise or activity \u2014 like sex \u2014 can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/ovarian-cysts-common-condition\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rupture a cyst,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where you may require surgery but oftentimes, the cyst dissipates on its own.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another growth is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fibroidfree.com\/fibroids\/uterine-fibroids-and-sex\/#:~:text=Fibroids%20can%20grow%20as%20large,fibroids%20experience%20bleeding%20with%20sex.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">uterine fibroids<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can grow as large as a melon, and put pressure on the uterus. You will typically feel pain during sex if you have a fibroid, and many women experience <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/what-are-uterine-fibroids\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bleeding after sex if they have a fibroid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cervical Erosion<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although scary sounding, cervical erosion, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/cervical-ectropion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cervical ectropion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is common and harmless. If <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medanta.org\/patient-education-blog\/6-signs-of-cervical-cancer-women-should-not-ignore#:~:text=With%20cervical%20cancer%2C%20you%20may,brown%20or%20bloody%20in%20colour.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you have cervical cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the blood is usually foul-smelling and pink or brown.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other symptoms of cervical cancer include bleeding between periods, having longer periods than normal, watery discharge that has a strong odor, and pain during sex.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure to visit a healthcare provider for your annual Pap test to screen for cervical cancer and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acog.org\/womens-health\/faqs\/cervical-cancer-screening#:~:text=Cervical%20cancer%20screening%20is%20used,screening%20on%20a%20regular%20basis.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">human papillomavirus (HPV)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How To Get Tested and Treated for Bleeding After Sex<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Usually, your doctor will conduct a few tests to rule out certain concerns.
