{"id":22031,"date":"2024-06-24T04:26:13","date_gmt":"2024-06-24T02:26:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/?p=22031"},"modified":"2024-06-24T04:26:33","modified_gmt":"2024-06-24T02:26:33","slug":"period-poverty-around-the-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/period-poverty-around-the-world\/","title":{"rendered":"Period Poverty Around the World"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Things such as beliefs, religions, attitudes, access to menstrual products, taboos, poverty, and societal expectations play a huge role in how menstruation is seen and experienced.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What may be normal for you may be completely foreign for women in other parts of the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, we\u2019re going to shine some light on the menstrual experience of women around the globe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is not only to become aware of how individual a period is to each woman, but also to bring awareness to things such as period poverty and unhealthy feelings of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shame<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> surrounding menstruation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lack of Period Resources<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Period poverty is when a woman doesn\u2019t have access to menstrual products, safe and hygienic places to use them, and the right to manage their period without shame or stigma.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And actually, it\u2019s more common than you may think\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Period poverty takes place in countries all over the world. In fact, research shows that period poverty exists in both richer and poorer countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The saddest part of this is that, for some, period poverty can have devastating and life-changing effects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These include <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health risks<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a lack of education and employment, and negative repercussions on one\u2019s well being.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, where period poverty exists, many girls and women are forced to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/penny-mordaunt-launches-new-funds-to-tackle-period-poverty-globally\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">make their own menstrual products<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> out of things such as rags, grass, or even paper.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Period Poverty Around the World<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Period Poverty in Africa<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In countries such as Kenya and Uganda, girls are forced to skip school or to drop out altogether, denying them the right to education.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And sadly, a whopping <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/menstrualhygieneday.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/FSG-Menstrual-Health-Landscape_Kenya.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">65% of girls and women in Kenya<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cannot afford menstrual products.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another shocking reality in Kenya is that some girls and women are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liebertpub.com\/doi\/10.1089\/jwh.2014.5031\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">forced into sexual exploitation in exchange for menstrual products<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for the general Sub-Saharan Africa, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.worldbank.org\/education\/globally-periods-are-causing-girls-be-absent-school\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study conducted by UNESCO<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that 1 in 10 girls in this region missed school during their period. This in itself adds to gender unequality in education and the workplace.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Period Poverty in New Zealand\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, in New Zealand, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/jun\/03\/new-zealand-tackles-period-poverty-with-free-sanitary-products-for-all-schoolgirls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2020 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> revealed that as many as 90,000 girls did not attend school during their period because they couldn\u2019t afford essential menstrual items.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And 12% of girls from year 9 to year 13 said they had difficulty obtaining menstrual products.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Period Poverty in Nepal<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In some parts of rural Nepal there is a practice called Chhaupadi\u2014an ancient tradition where girls and women are sent to stay in huts whilst on their period because their period <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is seen as \u201cbad luck\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During this time, they often have no or very limited access to menstrual products and sanitary conditions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Period Poverty in the U.K.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the U.K. it was said that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/international-women-s-day-period-girls-missed-school-uk-sanitary-products-menstruation-a8244396.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than 137,000 girls missed school because they could not afford period products<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Many parents of these girls had even resorted to stealing in order to support their daughters.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, more than one fifth of U.K. parents said that they had gone without something themselves so that they could provide menstrual products for their child.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, during the pandemic in 2022, up to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/plan-uk.org\/media-centre\/over-one-million-girls-in-the-uk-struggled-to-afford-or-access-period-products-during-the-pandemic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">73% of U.K girls and women<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were forced to use toilet paper because they weren\u2019t able to buy period products.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Period Poverty in the U.S.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the U.S. a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/greenjournal\/Fulltext\/2019\/02000\/Unmet_Menstrual_Hygiene_Needs_Among_Low_Income.2.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2019 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that 64 percent of girls and women in Missouri were unable to afford period products within that year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These girls and women then made use of items such as diapers or paper towels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, nearly half of these women couldn\u2019t afford both food and period items at the same time.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Period Poverty Awareness: A WaterAid Photo Series<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we\u2019ve now discussed some of the harsh and life-threatening effects of period poverty, we\u2019d like to talk about a photo series project by the charity <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wateraid.org\/us\/media\/photo-gallery-sanitary-pads-around-the-world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WaterAid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This photo and interview-style initiative was brought about to try end period poverty and bring about more awareness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s what girls and women have to say about their period experiences around the world\u2026\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pakistan\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy mom told me to use cloth during my periods. I cannot afford to use sanitary pads,&#8221; <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says Saba, 18, in Pakistan&#8217;s capital, Islamabad.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uganda<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I use [a] goatskin skirt because it\u2019s always available. It\u2019s our traditional sanitary pad. I don\u2019t pay anyone to use the skin,&#8221; <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says Lepera Joyce, 23.<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8220;Other pads are expensive. Even if my skirt gets old, I will make another one since we have many goats. My grandmother taught me how to make and use the goatskin skirt during menstruation.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The U.K.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The environment is a big factor for why I use reusable sanitary pads. It\u2019s about reducing waste,\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says 27-year-old Hilary from London. &#8220;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I use a combination of different reusable sanitary pads, cotton or bamboo, when I am on my period. It is important to me that they are made of natural materials because I find it most comfortable and eco-friendly. Fortunately, I am in the privileged position to think of comfort when it comes to sanitary towels.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zambia\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Limpo, 22, from Zambia uses cow patties as a form of menstrual products. \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I do not put the cow patties directly on my skin, I wrap it in a cloth and place it nicely to capture the flow without staining other clothes,&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> she explains.<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8220;I like this method because cow patties soak up a lot of blood before they are completely soaked. I go about doing all sorts of things without any trouble.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Australia\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have an IUD to help manage my endometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome, which in turn helps manage my menstrual cycle as well,\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says Steph, 27, from Melbourne.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uganda\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Munyes, a 44-year-old woman in Uganda says that it is \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">easy and very normal to make a hole in the ground and sit on top of it for blood to drain in it.&#8221; <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She explains: &#8220;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I find managing my period using this method very convenient because buying sanitary pads is costly and sometimes when blood comes there is no time to run to the shop to buy sanitary pads.
