Strange, but also kind of cool in a weird way? As if you\u2019ve formed some sort of special bond with each other.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or how about when your entire squad is on their period? Crazy! There has to be some logic behind this, right? Is it period syncing? Is it a coincidence? Who knows!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, actually: professionals and researchers know! And now you will too!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Is Period Syncing?<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Period syncing is the idea that when women live in close proximity to each other, or they spend a lot of time together, the timing of their monthly period will start to \u201csync up\u201d or align.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first evidence to suggest that period syncing could be a \u201creal thing\u201d was in 1971 in a paper called the \u201cMcClintock study\u201d. This study was named after <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Martha_McClintock\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Martha McClintock<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a researcher at Harvard University.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The McClintock Study<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McClintock began researching the topic by looking at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/how-covid-affects-periods\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">menstrual cycle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of a small number of women aged 17-22 who lived in the college dorms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She divided the women into two groups: those within close proximity of each other, such as best friends or roommates, and those who had no relationship with a select group of women.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After six months, she found that those who lived within close proximity of each other started their <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">period<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> within 3 to 7 days apart, whereas those who weren\u2019t in close proximity started their period with 5 to 15 days apart.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, given the small scale of this study, and the fact that it is outdated, are the results still valid or reliable? Well, not really, according to other researchers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Results of Other Studies that Researched Period Syncing\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the McClintock study, the topic quickly gained traction and other researchers got to work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are some of the results:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/8416051\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>1993<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: a study showed that 29 same-sex couples did not experience syncing.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/8577884\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>1995<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: a study showed that pairs of close friends who did not live together did not experience syncing.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/helloclue.com\/articles\/cycle-a-z\/do-menstrual-cycles-sync-unlikely-finds-clue-data\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>2017<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: the app Clue partnered with Oxford University to analyze 360 pairs of women who were close friends. After 3 cycles, 273 of the pairs noticed an even bigger difference in their period start date as opposed to the beginning of the study.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The last study actually shows the opposite to be true and that period syncing is not a thing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, before you believe these studies to be 100% valid, it\u2019s important to note that they were not peer-reviewed by medical experts. That means that the results have not been signed off as conclusive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, more research needs to be done in order to finally conclude that period syncing is real. But, as it stands, it\u2019s strongly suggested that period syncing is not real.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Theory on Period Syncing<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is it that leads some to believe in period syncing? Why does it actually happen?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, there\u2019s a theory that suggests that, if period syncing <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> real, it has to do with the release of pheromones when women are in close proximity to each other.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pheromones are chemicals that, when released, influence the behavior of others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But this theory doesn\u2019t really have much value today because of modern day habits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPheromones are largely emitted from the armpits and the groin, but think about the habits of modern-day society. Maybe there\u2019s something there, but if you\u2019re washing it all off when you shower, the pheromones aren\u2019t going to have much effect,\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/staff\/14598-stasia-jhaveri\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Stasia Jhaveri<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, ob\/gyn.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Period Synching: Is It Merely a Question of Time &amp; Mathematics?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Up until now, we\u2019ve not found any reliable data to prove that period syncing is real. In fact, a lot of the studies indicate that it isn\u2019t.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But is there one possible explanation as to why you may feel as though your period is synced with your friends or roommates? Indeed. And it all has to do with time and mathematics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You see, over time, a woman who has a 3-week cycle and another who has a 5-week cycle will eventually see their periods overlap.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s anecdotal that you\u2019re likely to remember the times you had bad cramps at the same time your roommate did more than the times you didn\u2019t<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d says Dr. Jhaveri. \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You will overlap and diverge because women have different cycle lengths.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This makes sense.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And so, because there\u2019s not enough evidence to prove that cycle syncing is real, what are some factors that actually <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">do<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> influence your period?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Factors that Influence Your Period<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Being on the birth control pill:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when you are on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/how-does-using-birth-control-affect-your-period\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">birth control pill<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it alters the levels of sex hormones in your body which, in turn, can control if or when you have a period.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Extreme stress<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: if you are extremely stressed, your body will release the stress hormone called cortisol. When you have high levels of cortisol, it could stop <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/the-elusive-world-of-ovulation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ovulation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in its tracks, affecting if and when you have your period.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Chronic illness<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a number of chronic illnesses such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/4-myths-about-diabetes-busted\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, cystic fibrosis, renal disease, and inflammatory bowel disease can affect one\u2019s menstrual cycle.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Anorexia\/bulimia: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">repeated<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">purging and binging can cause your period to become irregular or even stop it completely.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Exercise<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: if you\u2019re exercising excessively, it could cause you to miss your period or have it stop completely because of the change in hormones that extreme exercise can bring.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, while the idea behind period syncing is quite endearing, truth be told, it\u2019s impossible to prove that it actually happens. In actuality, there are more studies that say it doesn\u2019t than studies that say it does.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Granted, more research could be done on the matter. But for now, sorry ladies: period syncing isn\u2019t real. It\u2019s merely a myth that could be fun to believe in.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And hey, you\u2019re not hurting anyone if you find comfort in being on your period at the same time as your bestie!<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Isn\u2019t it strange when you and your best friend are on your period at the same time?
