{"id":22072,"date":"2024-08-04T14:16:31","date_gmt":"2024-08-04T12:16:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/?p=22072"},"modified":"2024-08-04T14:16:54","modified_gmt":"2024-08-04T12:16:54","slug":"men-women-diagnosis-disparities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/men-women-diagnosis-disparities\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Women Are More Likely To Be Misdiagnosed for Pain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women are not only listened to less in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessnewsdaily.com\/3150-women-speak-less.html#:~:text=Women%20are%20more%20likely%20to%20be%20interrupted%20at%20work.&amp;text=The%20research%20also%20suggested%20that,interrupted%20than%20during%20other%20hearings.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">workplace<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/michelleking\/2021\/10\/26\/the-authority-gap-why-women-are-still-taken-less-seriously-than-men\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leadership roles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but also by the people we are supposed to trust the most \u2013 medical providers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From ovarian cysts being labeled as normal \u201cperiod pain\u201d to autoimmune disorders being misdiagnosed as depression, a host of women\u2019s health issues are commonly misdiagnosed by doctors, or simply dismissed as a figment of their imagination. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This disparity can have wide-ranging, significant, and even fatal implications; in one study published by Academic Emergency Medicine, <strong>women who visited the ER reporting severe stomach pain were forced to wait, on average, nearly one third of the time longer than men who went in complaining about the same symptoms. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, why does this kind of gaslighting still happen in the age of modern medicine, and what can we do about it?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women In Pain May Be Treated Less Seriously Than Men<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the past, doctors used to commonly diagnose women who came into their office with all types of physical and mental ailments with \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcgill.ca\/oss\/article\/history-quackery\/history-hysteria#:~:text=Before%20its%20classification%20as%20a,ancient%20Egyptian%20and%20Greek%20societies.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hysteria<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d and prescribe pills (often with sedative effects) to calm them down. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s not much different today. <strong>Women who tell their doctors that they\u2019re in pain are significantly more likely than men complaining of the same symptoms to receive prescriptions for <\/strong><\/span><strong><i>sedatives<\/i>, and not painkillers. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.upi.com\/Archives\/1989\/03\/11\/Researcher-says-women-less-likely-to-get-painkillers\/2047605595600\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, women who had undergone coronary bypass surgery were only 50% as likely to be prescribed painkillers, compared to men who had received the exact same medical procedure. In the ER in the United States, men only wait an average of 49 minutes before receiving an analgesic for acute abdominal pain, while women wait an average of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/health\/archive\/2015\/10\/emergency-room-wait-times-sexism\/410515\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">65 minutes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some more troubling statistics recently published in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wellness\/interactive\/2022\/women-pain-gender-bias-doctors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Washington Post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> illustrate the discrepancy between the way female and male pain is treated, and the implications of doing so:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Journal of the American Heart Association reported that women who visited emergency departments in 2022 with chest pain had to wait 29% longer on average than men to be screened for potential heart attacks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an analysis of 981 emergency room visits, women who had acute abdominal pain had up to a 25% less likely chance than males with the same symptoms to be prescribed powerful opioid painkillers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Middle-aged women who told their doctors they had symptoms of heart disease such as chest pain were twice as likely to be diagnosed with a mental illness, compared to men with the same symptoms<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We Understand Female Physiology Less Than Male<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part of the reason for these disparities and gender biases within the medical system is that <strong>the medical community has done less research oriented on female pain and physiology<\/strong>. The medical concepts of most diseases are <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.marieclaire.com\/health-fitness\/a26741\/doctors-treat-women-like-men\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contingent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on how we understand male physiology, and the studies done are typically oriented around male subjects. This can have devastating, even fatal effects. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, The New England Journal of Medicine published a study <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJM200008243430809\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in 2000<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> finding that <strong>women are seven times more likely than men to suffer a misdiagnosis and actually be discharged while <\/strong><\/span><strong><i>actually having a heart attack<\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. 70% of people who suffer from chronic pain are women, but 80% of studies on pain are conducted on human men or male mice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In one of the few studies that specifically look into how gender can impact the way we experience pain, women were found to feel more pain for more often, and at higher levels of intensity than men. Although researchers haven\u2019t been able to pinpoint the exact reasons behind this discrepancy, it is likely that hormones and biology play a significant part.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It Happens More Often Than You Think &#8211; Even To Women Doctors<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s more good news for women: Even female physicians and medical professionals are not immune to this discrepancy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wellness\/interactive\/2022\/women-pain-gender-bias-doctors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Washington Post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> article highlights the experiences of Ilene Ruhoy, a 53-year-old female neurologist in the Seattle area. Ruhoy was experiencing recurrent pounding in her ears and headaches. Even though she had a medical degree and specialized in studying how the brain worked, it was difficult for her to get doctors to order a brain scan. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The wait wasted precious time, and by the time they finally looked into the issue, a tumor the size of a tennis ball had formed in her brain and was putting pressure on it. Ruhoy survived the ensuing surgery, but the tumor had grown too large to be completely taken out, so she now must undergo radiation treatment for the smaller tumors that formed. If she had been taken seriously and evaluated in time, the smaller tumors may not have had time to form.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have a long history in the West of negating female pain and stereotyping women as being more prone to being \u201chysterical.\u201d Even in today\u2019s age of modern medicine, i<strong>t\u2019s more likely for women to have their complaints <\/strong><\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=383803\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">misdiagnosed<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong> as psychological disorders<\/strong> or \u2013 as Ruhoy\u2019s case illustrates \u2013 brushed off as \u201cstress.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compounded with the knowledge gap (women were excluded from the majority of clinical research until the early 1990s), doctors today continue to have less information and general understanding of women\u2019s symptoms, bodies, and common conditions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Women are not only listened to less in the workplace and in leadership roles, but also by the people we are supposed to trust the most \u2013 medical providers.
