Approximately <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fertstert.org\/article\/S0015-0282(10)00542-X\/pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">70% of women with PCOS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are insulin-resistant. Elevated blood sugars and insulin resistance are tied to depression, however, scientists aren&#8217;t entirely sure why.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 2021 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/med.stanford.edu\/news\/all-news\/2021\/09\/insulin-resistance-major-depressive-disorder.html#:~:text=Stanford%20Medicine%20scientists%20have%20linked,postdoctoral%20scholar%20in%20Rasgon's%20group.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stanford Medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> study found that people with insulin resistance had double the risk of having depression. A 2023 study published in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10641573\/#:~:text=Insulin%20resistance%20may%20be%20linked,neuroinflammation%20%5B78%2C79%5D.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biochemistry and Biophysics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> report also found a link, with insulin resistance promoting neuroinflammation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insulin resistance occurs when the cells in the muscles, fat, and liver no longer respond to insulin, which causes blood sugar levels to rise. The pancreas must produce more insulin to move glucose. The body isn&#8217;t able to keep up and produce enough insulin, resulting in the excess sugar being stored as fat.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Inflammation and Stress<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PCOS can often cause inflammation in the body like high cortisol which is linked to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/stress-men-vs-women\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased stress<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and depression. High cortisol and insulin resistance can both promote <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/ozempic-for-pcos\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight gain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which in turn, can lead to stress over appearance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with PCOS have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/testosterone-and-the-female-body\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">elevated levels of androgens<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that could possibly contribute to mood changes. If androgens remain elevated for a long period of time, symptoms like acne and excess body hair may appear. This could be another factor that can contribute to stress and depression.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Infertility<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many women with PCOS are depressed over their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fertilitycenter.com\/fertility_cares_blog\/pcos-depression-and-anxiety-tending-to-mental-health\/#:~:text=Polycystic%20ovary%20syndrome%20(PCOS)%20affects,as%20those%20who%20don't.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inability to have children<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Treating infertility can also worsen depression as it puts strains on finances and can also be unsuccessful. The stress on the body can physically exhaust a woman when trying to conceive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moreover, PCOS can increase pregnancy complications and can lead to:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gestational diabetes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High blood pressure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/preeclampsia-in-pregnancy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preeclampsia<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preterm birth<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">C-section delivery due to high blood pressure and obesity<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recovering or dealing with this type of complication can cause someone to experience more amounts of stress or depressive symptoms as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>PCOS and Other Health Conditions<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to depression, research has found that PCOS is also linked to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/ocd-in-women\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, bipolar disorder, autism spectrum disorder, eating disorders, and sleep disorders.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other health conditions related to PCOS include diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, endometrial hyperplasia, and endometrial cancer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you believe you have PCOS, or if your doctor is concerned, testing will involve a pelvic examination, a physical examination, a blood test, or an ultrasound to help with the diagnosis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Treatment for PCOS and depression<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to get depression under control, it&#8217;s important to treat PCOS, too. While there is currently no cure for PCOS, patients can manage their conditions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Birth Control and Diet<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment for PCOS includes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/birth-control-for-pcos\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">birth control pills<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for hormonal imbalances or eating a more nutritious diet for insulin resistance. While there isn&#8217;t much scientific research linking mood and diet for people with PCOS, some studies have found that the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7536728\/#:~:text=Mental%20health%20(QoL)%20improvements%20significantly,and%20improved%20rates%20or%20remission.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mediterranean diet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which consists of fish, vegetables, and legumes protects people from depressive symptoms.\u00a0 In a 2023 study in Scientific Reports, women with PCOS who exercised had lower symptoms of depression than women with and without PCOS.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Therapy<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to lifestyle changes, treating both PCOS and depression can include talk therapy to discuss the changes you&#8217;re feeling from the condition and how you&#8217;re coping.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Medication<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antidepressants for depression are common, however, some antidepressants can cause weight gain and could lead to more detrimental health impacts. Sertraline, an SSRI, is commonly prescribed to women with PCOS, however, there needs to be more research done on how medication can treat the condition&#8217;s side effects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other medications include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK518983\/#:~:text=Metformin%20is%20considered%20a%20safe,providers%2C%20fosters%20optimized%20therapeutic%20outcomes.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metformin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is typically used to treat <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/diabetes-and-vaginal-health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">type 2 diabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but can regulate and lower insulin and blood sugar levels.
