And unfortunately, loose teeth are one of the alarming side effects that come along with motherhood.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, why do women experience loose teeth during pregnancy, and can it lead to further issues?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marchofdimes.org\/find-support\/topics\/pregnancy\/dental-health-during-pregnancy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the March of Dimes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an increase in hormone levels leads to an increase in acidity in the mouth. High levels of progesterone and estrogen, two hormones present during pregnancy, can lead to the loosening of the tissues and bones surrounding the teeth, which will wiggle back and forth. These loosened teeth are only temporary, however.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6894835\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2019 study published in PLoS One<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says that it&#8217;s common for women to think that they may even lose their teeth entirely during pregnancy. Loose teeth are possible, yes, but losing a tooth is connected to another underlying condition or issue with dental hygiene.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, a more serious concern is gum disease, also known as periodontal disease. When gingivitis is left untreated, it can lead to serious infections in the bones that support the teeth. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that up to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/oralhealth\/publications\/features\/pregnancy-and-oral-health.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">75% of pregnant people<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> experience <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ebusiness.ada.org\/Assets\/docs\/2313.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gingivitis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Periodontal disease ultimately requires teeth to be pulled or extracted. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26504910\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a 2016 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, women with gum disease may go on to experience preterm labor or have babies with a low birth weight. This disease can also lead to bacteremia, which is when bacteria enter the bloodstream. Bacteremia is a serious condition that requires professional help and treatment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2021, a mother of four came forward and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/can-you-lose-teeth-during-pregnancy-what-dentists-want-people-t230313\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shared her story with TODAY<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about how she wears full dentures at age 34 due to tooth decay during every one of her pregnancies. However, experts say her case is a rarity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnancy can increase your chances of oral health problems, but pregnancy itself does not necessarily lead to loose teeth, cavities, or gingivitis. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/toothdecay.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Library of Medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says that losing a tooth due to tooth decay stems from poor oral hygiene, poor diet, bad lifestyle habits, smoking, using drugs, or undiagnosed dental diseases.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are several factors that can contribute to changing dental health while pregnant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changes in dental hygiene can be due to:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disruption in hormones.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/12416776\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Change in diet and eating habits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like eating more snacks or sweets.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loss in routine which leads to less brushing and less flossing.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mouthhealthy.org\/en\/pregnancy\/concerns\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea while brushing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or flossing may cause you to practice dental hygiene less, too.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are other dental issues that can occur?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to loose teeth, other dental concerns include cavities, which are more common during pregnancy. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9448953\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bacteria can be passed down to your baby<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can cause problems later in your baby&#8217;s life. Since babies are born without any bacteria in their mouths, the bacteria from your cavities can be passed on and contribute to their cavities later on in the future either as a baby or as an adult.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Refrain from getting a cavity filled while pregnant, especially amalgam or silver fillings that contain mercury. Mercury can be passed on to the baby through the placenta and is linked to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/understanding-miscarriage\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">miscarriage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/preeclampsia-in-pregnancy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">preeclampsia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and low birth weight. If you must get a cavity filled while pregnant, get a mercury-free resin filling made of plastic and powdered glass.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums that causes redness and swelling. It is typically induced by pregnancy hormones in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/pregnancy-week-by-week\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">third trimester<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and can lead to gum disease if left untreated. Irritated gums can be calmed by rinsing with 1 teaspoon of salt in 1 cup of warm water.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vomiting from pregnancy can also lead to tooth erosion due to stomach acid that causes issues with the enamel of the teeth. Rinsing your teeth with fluoride mouthwash can help establish and restore enamel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A common misconception is that the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/prenatal-vitamins-101-what-do-you-need-to-use-during-pregnancy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">calcium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a mother&#8217;s teeth is used for the baby. This is, in fact, a myth; a mother&#8217;s teeth don&#8217;t lose calcium while pregnant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms and prevention of dental problems<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not everyone experiences dental issues during pregnancy but if you have any symptoms, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/oral-health\/hcp\/conversation-tips\/talking-to-pregnant-women-about-oral-health.html?CDC_AAref_Val=https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/oralhealth\/publications\/features\/pregnancy-and-oral-health.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">check in with your doctor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or dentist for further care.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms of dental issues include bad breath, loose teeth, mouth sores, receding gums, bleeding gums, pus on the gumline, toothaches, or swollen gums.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preventing dental problems during pregnancy can be accomplished during regular checkups. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/how-to-prepare-your-body-for-pregnancy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before getting pregnant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, make sure to get your regular dental cleaning and check in with your dentist about the state of your teeth and gums.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To continue having healthy teeth and gums while pregnant:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brush your teeth twice a day<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Floss twice a day<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Visit your dentist every 6 months<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eat healthy foods and stay away from too many sweets<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quit smoking\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dental hygiene is incredibly important even when one isn&#8217;t pregnant. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaosh.org\/connect\/15-health-issues-caused-by-poor-oral-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lack of dental hygiene<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is linked to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, Alzheimer&#8217;s disease, and oral osteoporosis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, moms-to-be should learn how to keep themselves healthy and, in turn, keep their babies healthy. The CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics launched <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aap.org\/en\/news-room\/campaigns-and-toolkits\/oral-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Protect Tiny Teeth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2019, which helps establish a conversation between doctors and pregnant patients about oral health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/21282684\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a 2011 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, children who are born to mothers with untreated cavities or tooth loss, have a three times higher chance of having cavities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In short, dental health matters.
