With the popular saying that &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/9-breastfeeding-facts\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">best is breast,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8221; it&#8217;s understandable that moms-to-be are concerned about the transmission of microplastics via breast milk.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Microplastics were named by Richard Thompson, a biologist who participated in a beach clean-up in 1993. After large plastics break down, they become smaller and more minute, resulting in microplastics. Since plastic never breaks down into organic material, this is alarming for the environment and humans.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10773697\/#:~:text=Results,of%20those%20who%20never%20breastfeed.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 75% of United States mothers decided to breastfeed in 2023. However, the numbers are dropping each year. In 2019, 83% of new mothers were breastfeeding.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breast milk has a plethora of health benefits. Research has found that it protects newborns from disease and can also benefit the mother by lowering her risk of ovarian cancer. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nichd.nih.gov\/health\/topics\/breastfeeding\/conditioninfo\/recommendations#:~:text=In%20the%20United%20States%2C%20the,Pediatrics%20(AAP)%20currently%20recommends:&amp;text=Infants%20should%20be%20fed%20breast,the%20mother%20and%20her%20infant.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that new mothers breastfeed their<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">babies for<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the first six months of their lives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies have found that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2569122\/#:~:text=In%20recent%20years%2C%20additional%20chemicals,POPs%20persist%20in%20women's%20milk.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contaminants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4606957\/#:~:text=Based%20on%20the%20reviewed%20studies,chlorinated%20pesticides%20in%20breast%20milk.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pesticides<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and chemicals are in breast milk. However, with recent concerns rising about microplastics, should mothers be worried?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Findings in Breast Milk<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This isn&#8217;t the first time pollutants have been found in breast milk. In fact, in 1951, <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cabdirect.org\/cabdirect\/abstract\/19512702146\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a survey of 32 women<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong> found that 30 had small amounts of the pesticide DDT<\/strong>, which was eventually <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/biomonitoring\/pdf\/ddt_factsheet.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">banned in the United States in 1972<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pesticides have been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2231435\/#:~:text=SYNTHESIS,much%20exposure%20had%20taken%20place.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">linked to cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, neurotoxicity, and disruption of the endocrine, reproductive, and immune systems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Moreover, children&#8217;s products, vehicles, electronics, and furniture all contain brominated flame retardants (BFRs), which in the 1970s were chemicals <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0140673678927587\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found in breast milk<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>.<\/strong> Today, BFRs have been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5890081\/#bib321\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">found in placentas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, showing how deep they can travel within the body and impact the baby. Some European countries have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.efsa.europa.eu\/en\/topics\/topic\/brominated-flame-retardants#:~:text=EU%20framework,of%20these%20substances%20by%20weight.&amp;text=Since%202006%20new%20electrical%20and,amount%20of%20PBBs%20and%20PBDEs.&amp;text=In%20July%202008%2C%20the%20European,originally%20exempted%20from%20the%20restrictions.&amp;text=In%202014%2C%20the%20EU%20recommended,presence%20of%20BFRs%20in%20food.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">banned BFRs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to protect the environment and human health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2022, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2073-4360\/14\/13\/2700\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study found that plastic particles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, AKA microplastics, were in 75% of the 34 breast milk that they studied. Other studies have found breast milk in placentas, heart tissue, the brain, and blood.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>The microplastics found in the study were made up of polyethylene, PVC, and polypropylene.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Microplastics are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9885170\/#:~:text=Over%20the%20years%2C%20the%20vaste,EDCs%5D%20and%20other%20harmful%20compounds.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">endocrine disrupters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, meaning they change the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/hormone-deep-dive-prolactin-the-milk-hormone\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">body&#8217;s hormone levels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can impact reproductive and neurological health, and alter behaviors in learning and parenting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infants are incredibly susceptible to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/watching-out-for-environmental-toxins\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chemicals and plastics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, however, research finds that breastfeeding is still incredibly important for both baby and mom.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/breastfeeding-benefits\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benefits of breastfeeding<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nutritional needs for your baby.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breastmilk protects your baby from infections.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breastmilk protects your baby from diseases.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breast milk is always available for your baby.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Buying formula does not offer the same protection and nutrition that breastfeeding does.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moreover, breastfeeding can benefit the mother too. Breastfeeding lowers the risk of:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ovarian cancer<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breast cancer<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Osteoporosis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cardiovascular disease<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How To Avoid Microplastics<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>If you&#8217;re concerned about passing microplastics through breastmilk, feeding your baby directly from the breast and not from a plastic bottle can be a good place to start.<\/strong> When you pump milk, store it in plastic, and then heat it up again later, you could be allowing microplastics to enter the milk. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Essentially, avoiding any type of plastic bottle when feeding your baby can reduce exposure to microplastics. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tcd.ie\/news_events\/articles\/bottle-fed-babies-may-consume-millions-of-microplastic-particles-our-research-suggests\/#:~:text=But%20in%20new%20research%2C%20we,large%20increase%20on%20previous%20estimates.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One study found<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that bottle-fed babies are swallowing 1.5 million particles of microplastics every day. The study also found that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0889157523004854#:~:text=It%20has%20been%20revealed%20that,et%20al.%2C%202022).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cow&#8217;s milk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can contain microplastics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>An option for storing breast milk includes mason jars with a silicone lid.<\/strong> A silicone lid is an alternative to the mason jar lids because they contain bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical used to create resins and plastics. When freezing milk in glass, leave room at the top for expansion so the glass doesn&#8217;t break.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Another option is silicone breast milk storage bags which include a zip top for easy 6-8 ounce storage.<\/strong> Silicone ice trays are also easy to pour and transfer to the freezer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People \u2014 from babies to adults \u2014 breathe and consume microplastics every day. However, <strong>avoiding plastic products as much as possible can reduce the chances of more exposure.<\/strong> Refrain from using plastic bottles, packaging made from plastic, storing food in plastic containers, and clothes made of synthetic fabrics. <strong>Moreover, reducing microplastics in general can be done by frequent vacuuming, dusting, and mopping.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other ways to avoid microplastics include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid plastic water bottles<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use a water filter<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don&#8217;t store leftovers in plastic containers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don&#8217;t microwave plastic<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don&#8217;t put plastic in the dishwasher<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use a wooden cutting board, not plastic<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Line-dry your clothing<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Microplastics are an invisible hazard to human health.
