But why do men have them? Well, you may have heard someone say, \u201cWe all start out female.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is an oversimplification, but there is some truth to it \u2013 all embryos start out with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/scitable\/topicpage\/genetic-mechanisms-of-sex-determination-314\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">capacity<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to become male or female. In the earliest stages of development, embryos of both sexes have structures that have the capability of developing either female or male reproductive organs (and occasionally a mix of both). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>When the embryo is around seven weeks old, certain <a href=\"https:\/\/ghr.nlm.nih.gov\/gene\/SRY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">genes<\/a> that determine the baby\u2019s sex activate and result in the formation of specific reproductive organs. However, breasts and nipples form <i>before<\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong> the genes kick in<\/strong>,<strong> so even as a baby develops into a male, the cells around the chest that form breasts and nipples remain, which is why men have nipples.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More People Have Multiple Nipples Than You Think<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As with any other part of the body, abnormalities can arise during structural development. In fact, <strong>around <\/strong><\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9809822\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1 in 20 people<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong> have extra (supernumerary) nipples. Most of the time these nipples are not functional and are often mistaken as a small pigmented mole.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why Do Women Have Hair On Their Nipples?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While many women may have a few hairs, or a single hair on their nipple, some women develop long, coarse, or dark hair on their nipples for a variety of reasons. Most of the time, hair on your nipples isn\u2019t a cause for concern (other than cosmetic ones). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>However, sudden growth of hair on your nipples, or a large amount of hair in the nipple area could be due to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/320835#causes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hormonal imbalances<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as the ones briefly detailed below. However, sometimes shifts in our hormone levels can make nipple hair to become more noticeable or suddenly pop up.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cushing\u2019s Syndrome<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cushing\u2019s syndrome is caused by an excess of cortisol in the body, and is typically associated with taking corticosteroids. Symptoms include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High blood pressure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abnormal periods<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased hair growth<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fat accumulation around the trunk, neck, and shoulders but not the limbs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facial puffiness, or \u201cmoon face\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nipples Come In All Shapes, Colors, and Sizes<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of us have been conditioned from a young age by Western mainstream media and (certain types of) porn to believe that the \u201cperfect\u201d nipple is small and pink. Luckily, this appears to be changing with nipples becoming a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/style\/fashion\/2023\/12\/13\/nipples-skims-bra\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fashion statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and more <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/reason.com\/2017\/03\/14\/pornocracy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">body diversity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in porn. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just remember: Get your yearly mammogram, and as long as it checks out, your nipples are perfectly fine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inverted Nipples Are Normal<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inverted nipples, also known as retracted nipples, are when the nipple points inwards rather than outwards. Up to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK563190\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10%\u201320%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of women are born with one or both inverted nipples. The vast majority of the time, naturally inverted nipples are not a cause for concern. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most women with inverted nipples can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.columbiadoctors.org\/health-library\/article\/breastfeeding-inverted-nipples\/#:~:text=Most%20women%20with%20inverted%20nipples,or%20lactation%20consultant%20for%20help.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">still breastfeed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Babies can usually still latch on, though they may need to do so over the entire areola depending on how much the nipple protrudes. Stimulation and breastfeeding can also cause nipples to stick out and become less inverted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes, nipples may become inverted due to changes in your breasts from breastfeeding, menopause, infected milk ducts, or complications after breast surgery. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, <strong>if you notice your nipple suddenly retracting, <\/strong><\/span><b>notify your doctor immediately as this could be a sign of breast cancer in women <\/b><b><i>and<\/i><\/b><b> men.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How Breastfeeding Changes Your Nipples<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are entire pamphlets written on nipples and breastfeeding, so we\u2019ll keep it brief with some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/patientinstructions\/000632.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common ways<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> nipples may change during pregnancy and breastfeeding:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Bigger, darker areola<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; As your breasts engorge to prepare for the baby, the skin stretches and it is normal for your areola (the skin around your nipples) to also grow. Areolas also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellfamily.com\/breastfeeding-the-areola-431668#:~:text=During%20pregnancy%2C%20the%20areola%E2%80%94the,latch%20on%20to%20encourage%20nursing.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">grow and darken<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during pregnancy to make an easier target for your newborn to find.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Flattened nipples<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; Engorged breasts can cause your nipples to flatten.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Inverted nipples<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; If your nipples have always pointed outwards and start pointing in, it could be due to an infection with your milk duct. Consult with your doctor right away.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Irritation and cracking<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; Dryness and leaking breast milk can all irritate your nipples, which is why it\u2019s important to keep your breasts clean and moisturized. There are many nipple creams specifically for nursing mothers that can help.
