It could be vulvodynia,\u201d says her nonchalant gynecologist after confirming it\u2019s not an yeast infection and not a serious condition.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s mostly just uncomfortable,\u201d she says, proceeding to prescribe her a light antidepressant.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBut I\u2019m not depressed,\u201d exclaims Charlotte, aghast.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s not for you. It\u2019s for your vagina.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Very few scenes in pop culture have had such an enormous impact on millennial women on the way they view their vaginas. The scene poses more questions than it answers: Can vaginas get depressed? Do they need antidepressants? Is this something I should be worried about?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have such burning questions (though hopefully not because of a burning vagina like Charlotte), read on to get some answers about vulvodynia, just what was going on in that scene, and some natural ways to perk up a so-called \u201cdepressed\u201d vagina.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Simple Answer Is No<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression is a kind of mood disorder that impacts the way somebody goes through their daily lives, and while your vagina may feel like a whole other creature sometimes (especially during that time of the month), it\u2019s not a person so it can\u2019t technically get \u201cdepressed.\u201d However, mental health fluctuations such as stress, anxiety, and depression can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/alicebroster\/2020\/11\/02\/can-your-mental-health-affect-your-vagina\/#:~:text=Vaginal%20atrophy&amp;text=Stress%20and%20anxiety%20can%20affect,and%20bleeding%2C%20in%20some%20cases.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">affect blood flow<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the vagina and cause symptoms like vaginal dryness and sexual dysfunction. On the flip side, having sexual dysfunction or pelvic pain can also impact your mood and potentially cause depression, especially if you have a history of the disorder. If you are experiencing these symptoms, you should speak to your healthcare provider.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The closest thing to a \u201cdepressed vagina\u201d is what Charlotte\u2019s gynecologist mentions on the show &#8211; a condition known as vulvodynia. OB-GYNs <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">do<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> often prescribe <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/jlgtd\/abstract\/2006\/10000\/treatment_of_vulvodynia_with_tricyclic.7.aspx#:~:text=However%2C%20systemic%20pharmacological%20therapy%20has,those%20used%20for%20antidepressant%20effects.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">light antidepressants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to treat vulvodynia because it can reduce the pelvic pain caused by the condition. That specific Sex and The City episode where Charlotte\u2019s OB-GYN prescribed her \u201cvagina\u201d antidepressants to help with her pelvic pain clearly stuck around with a generation of women, perhaps because chronic vulvar pain may be the result of depression and mental health issues like depression and anxiety may impact sexual function, though the two aren\u2019t always related.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But\u2026 You Could Have Vulvodynia<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we mentioned above, the symptoms Charlotte was experiencing match up to a condition called vulvodynia. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nva.org\/news\/press_releases03\/#:~:text=Charlotte%20is%20prescribed%20a%20low,there%20is%20no%20known%20cure.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vulvodynia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a condition where the patient experiences long-term discomfort or pain around their vulva (the outer part of the female genitals) for a minimum of three months with no specific cause. For some sufferers, vulvodynia can be so severe that it can be too uncomfortable to have sex or even to sit for long periods of time.
