From health and wellness podcasts to sports podcasts, it seems as if the vitamin supplement industry is singlehanded sponsoring half the podcast world. That\u2019s not necessarily a bad thing \u2013 modern diets may be lacking in certain essential nutrients, and it makes sense in this day and age to supplement our nutritional demands.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus, many of us take vitamins to optimize our health. It\u2019s one of the healthy living edicts we hear often along with drinking plenty of water, getting enough sleep, and exercising regularly. Some functions magnesium helps play a role in include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regulating nerve and muscle function<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turning food into energy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supporting the synthesis of DNA<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Developing healthy bones<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can find magnesium in a range of foods, particularly in dark leafy greens, nuts, seeds, legumes and fortified whole grains. The daily Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionsource.hsph.harvard.edu\/magnesium\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for adults 19-51+ years old<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is 310-320 mg for women and 400-420 mg for women. Pregnant women require slightly more magnesium about 350-360 mg per day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily multivitamins contain a combination of various vitamins and minerals \u2013 most commonly Vitamin C, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, Potassium, and Calcium \u2013 designed to fill in the gaps where your regular diet falls flat. <strong>The FDA has not approved any multivitamins for improving health<\/strong> and there have been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/wellness-and-prevention\/is-there-really-any-benefit-to-multivitamins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">very few studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showing that multivitamins help reduce in heart disease or cancer. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That being said, there also aren\u2019t any cons to taking a daily multivitamin, because you\u2019re probably <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/are-supplements-really-the-superheroes-of-self-care\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">absorbing so little<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of these vitamins that it doesn\u2019t make much of a difference. In the same vein, <strong>taking magnesium with your multivitamin is most likely fine<\/strong> because there isn\u2019t enough of any vitamin or mineral in a multivitamin to counteract the magnesium. If you\u2019re concerned about this, however, we recommend reading the label.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can I take B12 Vitamin D and Magnesium Together?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Absolutely! In fact, <strong>B12, Vitamin D, and Magnesium taken together may create synergistic effects and optimize the way they are all used by the body.<\/strong> Your body uses Vitamin D to absorb calcium. Along with calcium absorption, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/drugs-supplements-vitamin-d\/art-20363792\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitamin D<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also has antioxidant and neuroprotective cellular functions. The enzymes responsible for metabolizing this vitamin require magnesium, meaning that magnesium is essential for the absorption of vitamin D.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/drugs-supplements-vitamin-b12\/art-20363663\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitamin B12,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also known as cobalamin, is one of the eight B vitamins. The water-soluble vitamin plays a key role in the functioning of the nervous system as well as the formation of red blood cells and regulating energy processing from food consumed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitamin B12 does not appear to counteract Vitamin D. Vitamin B works in conjunction with magnesium to promote nervous system and psychological function, which is why many supplements combine the two. In short, <strong>this combination may promote absorption and bodily function.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can You Take Biotin and Magnesium Together?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/Biotin-HealthProfessional\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biotin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a B vitamin involved in an array of metabolic processes and perhaps most known for supporting skin and hair growth. Biotin can be found in foods like eggs, nuts, avocados, and sweet potatoes. There is no RDA for Biotin, but an adequate intake for adolescents and adults ranges from 30-100 micrograms per day. You may choose to take biotin for shinier skin, hair, and nails.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>There are no significant interactions between biotin and magnesium.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can You Take Vitamin D and E Together?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionsource.hsph.harvard.edu\/vitamin-e\/#:~:text=Vitamin%20E%20is%20a%20fat,%E2%80%9D%E2%80%94that%20can%20damage%20cells.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitamin E<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a fat-soluble vitamin that many people may recognize as an essential vitamin for healthy skin &#8211; you\u2019ll find many topical beauty and skincare products labeled to \u201ccontain vitamin E.\u201d Vitamin E is also an antioxidant, protecting against inflammation and chronic diseases such as cancer and heart disease. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supplementing Vitamin E doesn\u2019t interfere with the absorption with Vitamin D, but <strong>research shows that it may be best to take fat-soluble vitamins like D and E <\/strong><\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerlab.com\/answers\/which-vitamins-and-minerals-should-be-taken-together-or-separately\/how-to-take-vitamins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">apart from<\/a> certain other fat-soluble vitamins like vitamin K.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mind Your (Vitamin) Ps and Qs\u2026 or Ds and Ks<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you take several vitamins a day, or take a multivitamin, it\u2019s important to check what your multivitamin contains and if any of your other supplements may nullify their effects (and the point of supplementing). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you take any medications, always check both the label and with your medical provider about potential counter-effects, as certain vitamins and minerals may mess with the absorption of certain medications \u2013 or even result in unpleasant side effects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The other day, I noticed how many podcasts advertise vitamin supplementation.
