And many professionals will agree that becoming familiar with what your breasts normally look and feel like is a great way in which to become aware of any changes for early concerns or cancer detection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, we\u2019re going to be looking at breast lumps, what it feels like, the different types, and how to check for breast lumps aka do a breast self-exam.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Is a Breast Lump?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A breast lump is a localised swelling, bump, or mass in the breast that feels different from the surrounding breast tissue, and it can vary in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/menstrual-cup-size-guide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">size<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, texture, and tenderness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And while it can be completely daunting, it\u2019s important to remember that the majority of breast lumps are not breast cancer. In fact, there are many conditions that may cause benign (non-cancerous) breast lumps. On the other hand, the absence of a noticeable breast lump doesn\u2019t mean that breast cancer cannot or hasn\u2019t developed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is why it\u2019s important for women to do self-exams monthly from the age of 18, and for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/best-womens-groups-on-reddit\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">women<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over the age of 40 to go for an annual mammogram.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Does a Breast Lump Feel Like?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A breast lump can feel different depending on its cause. It can be found in or around the breast tissue, or in the underarm area, and its size can vary from a pea to larger than a golf ball. <\/span><b>Some common sensations and textures include:<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Firm or Hard<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This may feel like a solid mass within the breast<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cancerous lumps are often hard and irregular<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benign lumps can also feel firm<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smooth and Moveable<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Often round or oval<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can move slightly under your fingers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is often common with fibroadenomas (non-cancerous growths)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soft or Fluid-Filled<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">May feel squishy or like a small water balloon<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Often tender before a menstrual period<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common with breast cysts<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tender or Painful<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Especially around <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/5-menstruation-myths-busted\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">menstruation<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fixed in Place<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A lump that doesn\u2019t move easily<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Different Types of Breast Lumps<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For clarity, we\u2019ll divide this up into two sections; benign and malignant. Benign means non-cancerous, and malignant means cancerous.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benign Breast Lumps<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Fibroadenoma:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> occurs primarily in women in their 20s and 30s, the lump may feel rubbery and move around freely, it\u2019s often painless, varying in size, and can form anywhere in the breast tissue.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Fibrocystic breasts:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may come about in women with dense breasts, occurs naturally due to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hormonal<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fluctuations during menstruation, may feel lumpy, swollen, and sore before a period.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Breast cyst:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a fluid-filled sac inside the breast that\u2019s round or oval and may feel soft or firm. They\u2019re smooth, moveable, can be tender, and may change in size during menstruation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Fat necrosis: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">scar tissue from injured breast fat that may occur after trauma, surgery, or radiation. They\u2019re a firm, round lump, sometimes causing skim dimpling, and may mimic cancer on imaging.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Lipoma: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a slow-growing, fatty lump mass made of fat cells that are soft, painless, and move easily under the skin.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Breast abscess: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an infection (pocket of pus due to a bacterial infection) that causes a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">painful<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> lump, and is often associated with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/breastfeeding-fact-vs-fiction\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breastfeeding<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Symptoms include redness, swelling, and a fever.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Intraductal papilloma: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a small wart-like growth inside a breast, near the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/nipple-variation-and-changes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nipple<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that can lead to nipple discharge.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Malignant Breast Lumps<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cancerous breast lumps are caused by abnormal, uncontrolled cell growth in breast tissue. Unlike benign lumps, they can invade surrounding tissue and spread (metastasise) to other parts of the body.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the most common type of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/5-facts-about-breast-cancer\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breast cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that begins in the milk ducts and spreads into surrounding breast tissue. Symptoms may include a hard, irregular lump, skin dimpling, and nipple inversion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the second most common type of breast cancer that starts in the milk-producing lobules and spreads into nearby tissue. Symptoms may include thickening instead of a distinct lump, fullness or swelling, and subtle breast shape changes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ductal Carcinoma in situ (DCIS): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stage 0 breast cancer that\u2019s abnormal cells confined to the milk ducts that haven\u2019t invaded the surrounding tissue. Symptoms may include nipple discharge, but there is often no lump.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Inflammatory breast cancer: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a rare but aggressive form of breast cancer of which the cancer cells block the lymph vessels in the skin of the breast. Symptoms may include a red, swollen breast, warmth, skin that looks like an orange peel, and often without the presence of a distinct lump.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Triple-negative breast cancer: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hormone receptor-negative cancer, which is when there is a lack of estrogen receptors, progesterone receptors, and HER2 protein.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>HER2-positive breast cancer: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when there are high HER2 protein levels, promoting rapid growth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Paget disease of the breast: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a rare form of breast cancer affecting the nipple and often the areola. Symptoms may include red, flaky nipple skin, burning or itching, and a possible underlying lump.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How To Check for Breast Lumps At-Home\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>A simple, step-by-step guide on how to do a breast self-exam (BSE)&#8230;\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Get in Front of a Mirror<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stand undressed from the waist up in front of a mirror with your arms relaxed. Take a look at your breasts for changes in size or shape, swelling, skin dimpling (like an orange peel), redness or a rash, nipple inversion, or unusual discharge. Then, raise your arms overhead and repeat. After, place your hands on your hips pressing firmly and repeat again.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Lie Down<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lie down and place a pillow under your right shoulder. Put your right arm behind your head. Use the pads of your three middle fingers on your left hand and choose one pattern:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Circular<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: small circles from outer breast towards the nipple<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Vertical lines<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: up and down strips<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Wedge pattern<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: from outer breast toward the nipple and back out<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Use three types of pressure:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> light for just beneath the skin, medium for the middle tissue, and firm for the deep tissue near the ribs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cover the entire breast, armpit area, area to the collarbone, and down to the bra line.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Repeat on the other side.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Should You Do a Breast Self-Exam?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are menstruating, 3-5 days after your period ends<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you aren\u2019t menstruating, choose the same day each month<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pregnant<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, breastfeeding, or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">postmenopausal<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, pick a consistent monthly date<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With this information, it\u2019s clear that knowing your breasts well is a great way to notice any changes or abnormalities early, if they occur.
