Why medical-grade silicone?
Lily Cup™ and Lily Cup™ Compact are both made from 100% body-safe, medical-grade silicone. This material is: Lily Cup - Super Soft Reusable Menstrual Cup

Safe and healthy

Medical-grade silicone is an ultra-safe, inert material that is developed especially for medical proposes. It is hypoallergenic, latex-free, phthalate-free, and contains zero toxins. Silicone is non-absorbent, so it respects the pH and flora balance of the vagina.

Soft and comfortable

The silicone we use to make Lily Cups™ is super thin and flexible, so that they can be folded very small. Then, when inserted, they pop open easily and stay in place to keep you protected all day. The silicone of each Lily Cup™ has an incredibly soft and smooth finish; you don’t even feel your cup when you’re wearing it.

Hygienic and easy to clean

Silicone is non-porous so it inhibits bacterial growth, making it extra hygienic. The smooth surface of the cup makes it easy to clean with warm water and soap, and silicone is heat resistant so a Lily Cup™ can even be boiled for extra peace of mind. Choosing Between Lily Cup and Lily Cup Compact

For younger girls who have recently started menstruating we generally recommend the Lily Cup Compact due to its smaller size. However, all women’s bodies are different and only you can make the decision about what will fit your body.

Lily Cup classic is great for all levels of flow: from light to very heavy. Lily Cup Compact is best for light to medium flow. However, if you have a heavier flow you can still use it, you’ll just have to empty it more frequently.

Cervix Height:

Generally the closer your cervix is to the entrance of your vagina, the shorter your vaginal canal is, and this may affect the type of cup you should use. Women with a lower cervix may find Lily Cup Compact more comfortable as it is shorter. Both cups can also be shortened or trimmed, but be careful not to damage your cup. For more information on finding you cervix and trimming your cup, please see our FAQ here.

Choosing Size A or B

Childbirth can often affect the shape of the vagina and weaken pelvic floor tone. Size B is recommended to all women who have given birth vaginally.

Pelvic Floor Tone:

The pelvic floor muscles, also known as vaginal muscles, play an important role when wearing a menstrual cup because they determine the width of the vaginal canal and are the muscles that hold the cup in place. Like any other muscle group, as we age they lose elasticity, and are often affected by pregnancy or hormonal changes. If you know you have a weaker pelvic floor, (for example, if you experience bladder leaks or have lost vaginal tone) we recommend that you use size B.

We recommend that those who have not engaged in sexual intercourse use size A. For those concerned about the hymen, please consult your medical practitioner prior to use.

Lily Cup™
Lily Cup™ Compact
How do I choose between Lily Cup™ and Lily Cup™ Compact?

Lily Cup™ Compact is a collapsible menstrual cup. It folds flat so it’s easy to carry around in its cute little case. It offers up to 12 hours of protection and is perfect for women with a light to medium flow. If you have a heavier flow you can still use it, but it will just have to be emptied more frequently. It is a shorter cup so it’s great for women with a lower cervix (shorter vaginal canal).

Lily Cup™ is our higher capacity cup. It’s great for all levels of flow, from light to heavy. This cup is longer and is better for women with higher cervixes (longer vaginal canals), though the stem can also be trimmed to make it shorter. It offers up to 12 hours of protection. It features a unique non-spill rim.

How do I find my cervix?

The cervix can change position depending upon where you are in your menstrual cycle, so wait until your next period to check its position. The cervix is a tight ring of muscle where menstrual fluid flows from the uterus and feels a little like the tip of your nose. Wash your hands and insert one finger into your vagina. If you can easily reach your cervix with the tip of your finger then it is positioned quite low.

Which size should I choose?

Size is mainly determined by anatomy, childbearing history, and pelvic floor strength. Since a woman’s body undergoes many changes during life, both Lily Cup™ and Lily Cup™ Compact are available in two different sizes.

Size ASize B
You have not given birthYou have given birth vaginally
You have given birth by CaesareanYou have a weaker pelvic floor

Each cup is designed for maximum comfort and should not be felt when worn. If you feel any discomfort, you may need to change your size.

• If you are using a size A and feel that your cup is not securely collecting your menstrual flow and/or experience continual   spotting, then change to size B.
• If you are using a size B and find it difficult to insert and/or feel any discomfort during use, then change to size A.
• If you usually have a heavy flow, we recommend you use the regular Lily Cup™, which has a higher capacity.

Due to the Lily Cup’s slanted rim design, it does not need air holes.

How do I make the Lily Cup™ Compact shorter?

If your Lily Cup™ Compact is too long or the stem irritates you, you can turn the cup inside out and then insert it normally. It doesn’t change the way you use the cup or make it less effective (other than perhaps a small decrease in the capacity since the stem takes up space inside). This does not work for the Lily Cup™.

How do I trim the stem of the Lily Cup™ / Lily Cup™ Compact?

You can trim the stem of the Lily Cup™ to just below the 3rd ring so that you still have something to grip for removal. You can trim the stem of the Lily Cup™ Compact to just at the 3rd ring – maximum. Remove any more and you risk puncturing the cup and making it unusable. Please see the images below for a guide.

Lily Cup™Lily Cup™ Compact
Lily CupLily Cup Compact

Just remember that removing the stem, either by turning the cup inside-out or cutting it, can make it a little more difficult to remove, since you don't have anything to grip.

What is the Lily Cup™ made of?

The Lily Cup™ is made of an ultra-soft, medical-grade silicone. It is hypoallergenic and 100% free of phthalates, latex, bleaches, fibers or any other substance that could cause sensitivity or allergic reactions.

I am allergic to latex, is the Lily Cup™ safe for me?

Yes, the Lily Cup™ is latex-free and is made of premium medical-grade silicone that does not cause sensitivity or allergic reactions.

Can a Lily Cup™ get lost or stuck inside me?

No. The vagina ends at the cervix, so you can’t lose the cup in your body. If you are having trouble removing the cup, just try to relax your body and use your pelvic floor muscles to push the cup down until you can grip the stem and pull it further down. Once you can reach the base, squeeze to break the seal, which will make it easier to slide out. Certain positions, like squatting over the toilet, can shorten the vagina and bring the cup closer to the entrance as well.

I am a virgin, will the Lily Cup™ affect my hymen?

For those concerned about the hymen, please consult your medical practitioner prior to use.

What is TSS?

TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome) is a life-threatening condition caused by the toxin-producing strains of the Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. While rare, TSS is a serious disease that may be fatal. Symptoms can include sudden high fever, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, fainting, and a rash like sunburn.
If you have any of these signs while using a Lily Cup™, remove it and contact your doctor immediately. If you have been diagnosed with TSS in the past it is not recommended to use Lily Cup. If you are unsure please ask your medical practitioner.

Can I use the Lily Cup™ if I have an IUD?

The Lily Cups™ are held in a lower position than a tampon and should not interfere with an internal birth control device such as an IUD. However, before using any cup with an IUD you should discuss your specific situation with your physician and confirm that the IUD is positioned correctly and that the strings are not too long. While using the cup you should also make sure that you break the seal before removing and that the strings are above the cup when you wear it so you don’t pull on them when you remove it. For more details please see this article:

Is the dye safe?

Yes, the Lily Cup™ is made of the highest quality materials for maximum safety. The dye used is 100% body-safe and has been tested and approved in accordance with Oeko-Tex Standard 100.

Cleaning, Maintenance, and Care
How do I clean my cup?

Wash your Lily Cup™ before and after each use with mild soap and hot water. Do not use harsh soaps as they may cause irritation and disrupt the natural pH balance of your intimate area. Rinse thoroughly. For a more thorough cleaning, fully submerge your Lily Cup™ in boiling water for 5 to 8 minutes. Do not boil dry.

Other methods, recommended for occasional cleaning to removing stains:
Hydrogen peroxide (1%): Use 1 part 1% hydrogen peroxide and 1 part water. Submerge your cup and let it soak cup for 24 hours. Wash well to remove all of the hydrogen peroxide residue before using it or storing it.
White vinegar: Use 1 part vinegar and 2 parts water. Submerge and soak your cup for 24 hours. If, after washing the cup well, it still smells like vinegar follow up by boiling as above.

What substances should I avoid?

Do not use harsh cleaners, petroleum-based substances, tea-tree oil, alcohol, or bleach to clean your Lily Cup™.

How often should I clean the Lily Cup™?

Can I clean it in the dishwasher?

The Lily Cup™ Compact’s protective case can be washed with soap and water, and then dried before use.

When should I replace my Lily Cup™?

Cleaning and storing your Lily Cup™ properly will ensure that it lasts for a number of years. While the silicone is very durable, we recommend that you replace your Lily Cup™ if you notice any cuts, punctures, or the forming of an oily or sticky film. Slight discoloration is normal and may occur over time. Any discoloration that occurs will not affect the effectiveness or safety of the Lily Cup™.

Using the Lily Cup™
Could the Lily Cup™ Compact collapse inside me?

No, the Lily Cup™ Compact’s design means it will always stay rigid when worn. It will only collapse when you use your hands to collapse it.

How should I fold my cup?

There are several different options for folding; it depends on each woman’s body and preferences. No matter your folding technique, it is extremely important to make sure that the top of your cup completely opens once you have inserted it. Gently squeeze the base of the cup (not the stem) to open it inside your body.
You can find instructions on the most useful folds here.

Can I wear it overnight?

Yes, Lily Cup™ and Lily Cup™ Compact can be worn non-stop for 12 hours without needing to change it. Now you can enjoy a good night's sleep with stain-free sheets the next morning! If you usually have heavy flow, you may consider choosing the regular Lily Cup™ , which has a higher capacity.

Can I wear it while doing a vigorous workout?

Yes, if your Lily Cup™ was inserted properly, then you can rest assured that it will protect you during any of your favorite sporting activities.

Are there activities I should avoid when wearing my cup?

How many hours can I wear it without having to change it?

For the ultimate convenience, you can wear the Lily Cup™ or Lily Cup™ Compact non-stop for up to 12 hours without the need for regular changes. However, how often you personally will need to change it depends on your flow. For those heavier days you may need to change it more frequently than on your lighter ones.

I'm having leaks, am I wearing it right?

If the Lily Cup™ is inserted correctly you should be completely leak-free. It is important to remember that it takes a bit of time and practice to learn how to use a menstrual cup. But, if you are experiencing leaks, the most common reason is that when it was inserted the Lily Cup™ did not fully open to form a seal with the vaginal wall.

We recommend that you remove and reinsert your cup and try one of the following tips to ensure that the cup has fully opened. Once inserted:

1. Softly squeeze the base of the cup (not the stem) and slightly rotate it.
2. Insert 1 finger and gently run it around the inserted cup to ensure that a seal has formed.

Also, we suggest different folding options for the Lily Cup™; perhaps by trying a new folding option you may eliminate this problem.

I am a teenager and just got my period. Can I use the Lily Cup™?

Yes, even young girls can reap the many benefits that the Lily Cup™ offers. Since the Lily Cup™ rests in a lower position than a tampon; it is perfectly safe for women of all ages. If you are concerned about breaking the hymen, please consult your medical practitioner prior to use.

I just had a baby, can I use a Lily Cup™?

It is recommended that women wait 6 weeks after giving birth to use internal period protection. After that, and only if you are fully healed, you can use a cup for your first period after the birth of your baby. If you are experiencing vaginal pain, discomfort, or irritation, please consult your medical practitioner prior to use.

Is the Lily Cup™ recommended for use during menopause?

Yes! Lily Cup™ is highly recommended for use during menopause as it doesn’t cause dryness, and you can take it anywhere with you. During menopause your cycle can be very unpredictable, sometimes the flow will increase or decrease without warning. The Lily Cup™ is great for managing these changes without drying out intimate areas or causing further irritation, which are both common problems during menopause and are exacerbated by using uncomfortable tampons.

How often should I empty my cup?

You can wear your Lily Cup™ or Lily Cup™ Compact for up to 12 hours, and we recommend that you empty your cup 2-3 times per 24 hour period. Generally speaking, the lighter your flow, the less frequent the changes. But on those heavy days, you may need to empty your cup more often. With time and practice you will be able to gauge how often you personally need to empty your cup.

What if I can’t wash the cup at work/public toilet/while out?

Always remember you should wash your hands before handling your cup - consider carrying antibacterial hand wipes or hand sanitizer in your bag. The Lily Cup™ itself is designed not to encourage bacterial growth, so you can skip a rinse once in a while. If you don’t have access to a sink, you can use a piece of toilet paper to wipe the cup and re-insert it. Another option is to take a bottle of water with you into the bathroom stall and rinse the cup over the toilet.

Can I wear my cup during intercourse?

No, the Lily Cup™ cannot be worn during intercourse. It is important to note that the Lily Cup™ is not a contraceptive and will not prevent against pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases.

Insertion and removal advice
What should I do if I have difficulty inserting my cup?

First of all, relax your body! This will help to ease your vaginal muscles and facilitate insertion. Find a comfortable position and try the different folding options to see which one is most comfortable for you. You can also use a little water-based lubricant for added comfort.

Insertion of the Lily Cup™ is similar to that of a tampon and since it's new, it may seem a little difficult at first. With time and a bit of practice, inserting the Lily Cup™ will become effortless. In fact, most girls master the technique after a few attempts and then they love how comfortable it is.

Can I use a lubricant?

Yes. If you wish to use a lubricant, we recommend that you use a water-based product such as Intimina's Feminine Moisturizer. Avoid using a silicone-based lubricant as this could make the Lily Cup™ silicone permanently tacky.

What should I do if I have difficulty removing my cup?

Remain calm if you cannot remove your cup, there is no urgency as the Lily Cup™ can be worn for up to 12 hours. The key to easy removal is relaxing your body.

• In a slightly squatting position, use a series of gentle, downward pushes with your vaginal muscles to move the cup lower.
• Then grip the stem and slowly pull downwards.
• Once you can reach the base of the cup, gently squeeze the base to release the seal.
• Continue to pull the stem downwards and, when you feel that the base is almost out, angle your cup slightly to avoid any spillage.

Should I remove my cup during bowel movements?

The Lily Cup™ does not need to be removed for urination or bowel movement.
